GIRLS’ GUILD OF SERVICE

FIRST ANNUAL MEETING The report presented at the first annual meeting of the Girls’ Guild of Service showed that much useful patriotic work has been done during the 11 months that the guild has been in existence. The balance-sheet showed that the sum of £125 Us 0d was raised during the year for patriotic fU More than 300 children’s and babies’ garments had been made for the Lady Galway Guild and for St. Helens Hospital. Knitting had been done, a social had been organised for the patriotic fund, and more than 200 surprise packets for the Plunket street day appeal had been made up. . . . Members of the guild stocked and manned a stall for the Fighting Services Queen at the queen carnival. They had done much practical work for those serving In the Army, Ah’ Force, and Navy, as well as for members of the Home Guard and Emergency Precautions Scheme. They had collected for street appeals and acted as ushers for patriotic concerts. They had been hostesses at all Wednesday night dances at the Welcome Club, and made a donation of crockery and been Issued to guild members, Miss Bessie Pollard was appointed delegate to the general committee of the Welcome Club, Miss .Stephanie Holmes to the Area Health Stamp Committee, and Miss M. Webley to the Women’s War Service Auxiliary. The Girls’ Guild of Servicejolned the Women’s War Service Auxiliary as a canteen unit. 4 . ~ Officers were elected as follows.*— •Patron, Mrs R. M. Macfarlane; pres - dent, Miss Bessie Pollard; vice-presi-dents, Misses M. Webley and Kitty Clayton; treasurer. Miss Edith Tod, minute secretary, Miss Deborah Alexander; organising secretary. Miss Margaret McAuliffe; committee. Misses Joan Burt, Elisabeth Kent-Johnston, Kathleen Hertnon. Lynette Roberts, Mary Stevenson, Daphne Smith, Rae Marks, Ida Staples, Stephanie Holmes, and Patricia Devon; advisory committee, Mesdames J. G. L. Vernon (chairwoman), R. M. Macfarlane, and H. S. Feast. Mrs W. F. Kent-Johnston, founder of the Welcome Club, was made a life member.
