♦ COMPETITION FOR FIELD® ROOTS RESULTS OF JUDGING AT METHVEN The annual field roots competition, held under the auspices of the Methven Agricultural and Pastoral Association, was judged by Messrs F. J. Jenkins and A. W. Adams (turnips), and officers of the Department o; Agriculture (green feed;. Because of the •extremely adverse growing conditions after the sowing period, many of the original entries were withdrawn, and those entered were, generally speaking, much below the usual standard in the district. The results were:— Class A (8 acres, white fleshed turnips): G. Kelly, 75 points, 1; J. H. Stone, 72 points, 2; D, and W. E. Hampton, Methven, 3. Class B (5 acres yellow fleshed turnips): A. M. Hart 1. All other entries withdrawn. Class C (3 acres swedes): B. Cotterell (Mount Hutt), 77 points, 1; A. F. Marr (Methven), 74J points, 2. Class D (5 acres white fleshed turnips): A. E. Henderson 1. Class G (5 acres green feed) :• J. E. Harris 1, J. H. Stowe 2. Class H; J. E. Harris. The Southdown Society’s medal for best Southdown ram, under 22 months, was won by R. J. Low, Highbank. NEW MATERNITY HOME FURTHER REQUEST TO BE MADE A decision to continue their efforts for the erection of a new maternity hospital at Ashburton was made at a meeting of representatives of women’s organisations, including women’s institutes, woQien’s divisions of the Farmers’ Union, National Council of Women, Women’s Christian Temperance Union, and social services, on Monday afternoon. Mrs A. N. Grigg presided. A deputation from the organisations concerned waited on the Ashburton Hospital Board a few weeks ago with a request that a new maternity hospital be built, but after obtaining estimates the board decided against the proposal. HOCKEY TINWALD LADIES’ CLUB A successful season was reviewed In the report to the annual meeting of the Tinwald Ladies’ Hockey Club on Monday evening. Officers elected were:—Patron, Mr H. Millichamp; president, Mr H. A. Mclnnes: vice-presidents, Mesdames E. Stigiey, E. Kirk, S. Watson, Messrs T. W. Gudsell, and H. A. Humphreys: secretary, Mr M. Loach; captain, M. Donaldson; vice-captain, M. Henderson; committee, S. Chibnall, N. Loach. E. Proctor, E. Donaldson, R. Donaldson, S. Mathieson, E. Hampton: delegates to association, Mesdames Chibnall and Loach. ASHBURTON LADIES’ CLUB The annual meeting of the Ashburton Ladies’ Hockey Club was held on Monday evening. Officers were elected as follows: President, Miss M. Money; vice-presi-dents, Mesdames T. Lister, E. Young. Miss D. Fowke, Messrs C. Bishop, W. Corbett, R. Bonnington; secretary-treasurer. Miss J. Hendrie; committee, the above and Misses J. Taylor, M. Hansen, R. Bonnlngtpn, and J. 'Wilson: delegates to the association meeting. Misses J. Taylor and J. iUndric.
