RANGIORA NOTES

FAREWELL TO METHODIST

MINISTER

The Rev. H. Ryan, Methodist minister in Rangiora, who will shortly leave for Cambridge, was honoured at a farewell social, when appreciative reference was made to his work during four years with the circuit. Presentations of a travelling rug to Mr Ryan, a tea-set to Mrs Ryan, and a suitcase to Mr Geoffrey Ryan were made by Messrs C. S. Ayers and C. R. Thwaites for church members. Representatives of other churches were also present, and conveyed good wishes to Mr Ryan. Items were given by Mrs R. Dench, Miss D. Dench, and Messrs H. L. Dodge, R. G. Simpson, H. R. Taylor, and a quartet. Mr Ryan conducted the final services of his ministry in Rangiora on Sunday, when the choir sang special anthems. Band for Home Guard

The Rangiora Brass Band has now become the official band to the Rangiora unit of the Home Guard. This announcement was made at the last parade of the Home Guard. Personal Notes Staff Nurse Sylvia Cook and Airman Pilot E. R. Wortf, of North Canterbury, were honoured by a social and dance given by residents in the Coronation Hall, North Loburn, on Saturday night. Presentations were made by the chairman (Mr H. G. Philpott) and speakers were Mrs J. W. Macleod and Mr W. A. Thompson. Nurse M. Carson, formerly of the Rangiora District School dental clinic, has left to take up a. position with the dental clinic at the Phillipstown School, Christchurch. Poppy Day Proceeds

Although the final figure is not yet available, the returns of Poppy Day appeal in Rangiora yesterday amounted to £6O 8s 9d. This exceeds last year’s figure of £59 13s and with the sum to come in the total may be a record. Proceeds will go to the Returned Soldiers’ Association benevolent fund.

KAIAPOI MEN’S HOCKEY

CLUB

The annual meeting of the Kaiapoi Men’s Hockey Club was held in the Forresters’ Hall, Kaiapoi. Mr F. Hammer presided. The annual report and balance-sheet, showing a credit balance of £l3 4s 4d were adopted. The president referred to the general regret of members at the resignation of Mr A. H. Gray, who, for the last eight years has been secretary and to the club. In appreciation of his services Mr GYay was unanimously elected a life member. Officers were elected as follows: — President, Mr F. Hammer; vice-presi-dents. Messrs G. C. Adams, H. O. Hills, E. Fitzgerald, C. M. Williams, M.P., E. J. Johnston, and Dr. Stuart Riddell; club captain. Mr J. W. Capill; vicecaptain, Mr J. W. Taylor; secretary and treasurer, Mr R. C. Taylor; assistant secretary. Mr P. Taylor; committee, Messrs L. Beer. J. Taylor, H. E. Green, K. Inglefield, and A. Tavendale; custodian, Mr J. W. Taylor; groundsman, Mr H. E. Green; delegates to the Canterbury Hockey Association, Messrs J. W. Capill and H. E. Green.

WOMEN’S DIVISION OF FARMERS’ UNION

PORT LEVY BRANCH The second birthday party of the Port Levy branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held at the home of the president, Mrs E. W. Coop. A treasure hunt was held and tennis and clock golf were enjoyed by members and friends. After the birthday cake had been cut, the president presented a floral spray to the vice-president, Mrs Lewis Field. Sprays were also given to the following who gained most points in competitions held during the year:— Mrs E. W. Coop (cooking), Mrs E. Bailey (sewing and flowers). Members handed in jams, pickles, and preserves which will be given to the Union for the use of men of the fighting forces. OKUKU BRANCH Mrs R. Ensor presided at the annual meeting of the Okuku branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union held in the Okuku schoolroom. Mrs Doak (View Hill) conducted the annual meeting. Meetings during the year had been well attended, and a total of 103 articles had been knitted for patriotic purposes. Forty hussifs had been sent in and a shop held in Rangiora for soldiers’ comforts had proved very successful. The balance-sheet recorded a satisfactory financial position. The following officers were re-elect-ed: —Mrs R. Ensor, president; Mrs E. Crampton, secretary; Mrs H. Wood, treasurer. Mrs Doak gave a talk on home nursing and) remedies to be found in the home. Competitions were; Large bloom, Mrs Harper 1, Mrs Hutchison and Mrs R. Ensor (equal) 2; small bloom, Mrs Athol Smith 1, Mrs Dixon 2, Mrs J. Ensor 3; bowl flowers, Mrs R. Ensor 1, Mrs Hutchison 2, Mrs H. Wood 3. Hostesses were Mrs Hutchison and Mrs Harper. PATRIOTIC DANCE AT LINCOLN A social and dance was held in the Lincoln Public Hall by the dance committee of the Lincoln Patriotic Association, in ajd of the Patriotic Fund. There was a good attendance, and visitors danced to music supplied by Mr J. W. Stewart’s orchestra. Mr Gordon Ryan was the master of ceremonies, and novelty dances were won by Miss Irene Woods and Mr K. Gallagher, and Miss Rita Storer and partner. Extras were played by Miss Marie Mills. In the card room, Mr W. Greenslade conducted flag 500. Successful players were Mr F. Hill, Mr S. Major, and Mr P. Riordan.

LINCOLN PERSONAL NOTES

Miss Eileen Meinning (Dunedin) has returned to her home after a holiday spent as the guest of Mrs A. Moreland, Lincoln.

Mr and Mrs Robert Thomson have left Lincoln on the way to the United States of America, where Mr Thomson will take up tobacco research work. Mr Thomson received a wristlet watch from the staff of the Agronomy Division. On their return Mr and Mrs Thomson will make their home in Motueka. Mr L. M. Fairbrother has resumed duties at the Lincoln School after leave of absence on military duty. Miss Rich, who has been relieving at the school, has returned to Christchurch. Nurse Helen Cameron, of the Christchurch Public Hospital, is spending her vacation at Lincoln. *BOWLS AT KAIAPOI In the final of the Kaiapoi Bowling Club’s pairs championship, L. B. Evans and E. Monk 15, beat D. Whyte and W. G. Wylie 14. In the final of the Kaiapoi Working Men’s Club bowling club handicap pairs competition, H. V. Hutchinson and A. Bollington beat R. Fisher and S; J. Richards, by 25 points to 12.

WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

MAIREHAU At the monthly meeting of the Mairehau Women’s Institute, Mrs M. Morten gave a talk on “Royal Roads to Health.” The “golden thread” reading from Pioneer Tales was given by Mrs Callaway. There was a good .response to the roll call, “A gardening hint.” The president, Mrs Waugh, welcomed Mrs Carley, a visitor from New Plymouth, who, with Mesdames Morten and Strachan, judged the competitions. Results of the competitions were:— Shoulder spray of garden flowers: Miss Emmett 1, Mrs Atkinson 2, Mrs Robertson 3. Child’s garment for Lady Galway Guild: Mrs McCree 1, Miss Emmett 2. Mrs Bean and Mrs Robertson (equal) 3. , , „ , The secretary (Mrs Judd) read a letter from the Lady Galway Guild, exoressing appreciation of Mrs McCree’s efforts, and specially thanking members for the quilts they had sent to the depot. Mesdames Michaelis, Abercrombie, Carter and Collins were hostesses.

Mrs A. J. Harris, presided at the monthly meeting of the Kaikoura Women’s Institute held recently. The Rev. W. J. Bevis opened the meeting with prayer. Mesdames Warner and Newton, who represented Kaikoura at a meeting of institute delegates held at Blenheim gave a report of activities. The roll call was "Earliest recollections of your district.” Mrs Hopkins gave a demonstration of felt work, and Mesdames Monk and Warner gave a talk on artificial respiration. Hostesses at the tea hour were Mesdames A. Boyd, P. Boyd, Burland, Austin, and Clark. MEDBURY Mrs A. Dalzell presided at the annual meeting of the Medbury Women’s Institute. Officers elected were:—President, Mrs W. Dalzell; vice-presi- ■ dents, Mrs Denne and Miss Topp; secretary, Mrs M. Philpott: treasurer, Mrs F. Busch; committee, Mesdames Robinson, Cinders, Brooker. A. Dalzell, and Miss G. Dalzell. Mrs W. Dalzell was appointed delegate to the annual meeting of the North Canterbury Federation to be held at Omihi. Prize-winners for the year’s competitions were;— Sewing, Miss G. Dalzell; cooking, Miss G. Dalzell; gardening, Mrs W. Dalzell. Toshach and J. Gilbert were appointed group delegates. WAIPARA At the monthly meeting of the Waipara Women’s Institute the president (Mi's J. May) presided. Mrs Aydon was appointed delegate to the annual meeting of the North Canterbury Federation to be held at Omihi. Posies were presented to Mrs J. May, Miss H. Gainsford, and Miss J. Darrock in appreciation of their work for the institute during their term of office. The results of the competitions were;— Large bloom: Miss Gainsford 1, Mrs Hunt 2. Small bloom: Mrs Smith 1, Mrs Cameron 2. Pikelets; Mrs Wilson 1. Mrs Darrock 2. Mixed flowers; Mrs Conway 1, Mrs Gainsford 2. The hostesses were Mesdames Darrock, Uren, and. Campbell. OMIHI At the April meeting of the Omihi Women’s Institute, the president, Mrs J. Harris, presided over a good attendance of members. A social afternoon was spent.
