ARMED FORCES BOARD

APPEALS HEARD AT RANGIORA SITTING

Appeals against sfrvice overseas were considered at a sitting of the Armed Forces Appeal Board at Rangiora yesterday. Mr F. F. Reid, S.M., presided, and with him were Messrs G. M. Hall and A. H. McKane. Mr E. C. Champion appeared, for the Crown.

George Harry Stonyer, dairy farmer, Southbrook (Mr.A. G. Van Asch), appealed on the grounds of public interest and undue hardship. The appeal was adjourned sine die. The appeal of William John Carson (Mr H. Edgar), farmer, Waipara, on the grounds of public interest and undue hardship, was dismissed, a condition being that Carson should not be called on to begin training before July 1. Leonard D. Meyers, trustee of the estate of A. Meyers (Oxford) appealed for Harley K. Marsh, farm worker, the grounds being public interest and undue hardship. The appeal was adjourned sine die. - With provision that the reservist need not enter camp before June 1, the appeal of Clarence Edward Lewis, farmer, Sefton (Mr G. T. Weston), on the ground of undue hardship, was dismissed.

The appeal of James Francis McGrath (Mr A. C. Fraser) on the grounds of public interest and undue hardship, was adjourned sine die. The appellant was ordered to join the Territorial forces.

M. A. Loffhagen was co-appellant with William Albert Loffhagen (Mr E. D. R. Smith), whose appeal, based,on undue hardship and public interest, was adjourned sine die. Stating that he had been a member of the Exclusive Brethren since 1932, Ivory Lloyd Dartnall appealed on the ground of conscientious objection, in addition to undue hardship and public interest. The appeal was dismissed on the ground of undue hardship, reserved on the ground of conscientious objection, and adjourned sine die on the third ground. The appeal of James Ashworth, farmer, Leithfleld, for Arthur William Forbes (Mr A. G. Reid) on the grounds of undue hardship and public interest was adjourned sine die. The appeal of the Director of National Service for Maxwell Torlesse Russell, farmer, was dismissed. A similar appeal in respect of Norman A, Russell was adjourned sine die. William Joseph Stringer’s appeal for Errol W. Stringer was dismissed, a condition being that the reservist should, not be called up till August 1. David G. Blackmore’s appeal was adjourned sine die, a condition being that he join the Territorial forces. The Director of National Service appealed for Percy James Ford. The appeal was dismissed, as also was that of the director for William J. Chambers.

The appeal of the director for Roger Joffre O’Connell and of Donald C. Milne, with Mrs M. M. Milne as coappellant in the latter case, were adjourned sine die. James Aubrey Petrie, for whom the director appealed, was informed that he need not begin training till July 1, the appeal being dismissed.

HORORATA PUBLIC LIBRARY

The annual meeting of the Hororata Public Library was held in the library. Mr F. N. Wright presided. The bal-ance-sheet, which showed a credit of £7 12s, was considered highly satisfaQjory. The secretary reported a very successful year, 200 books having been in circulation.

Officers elected were:—Mr F. N. Wright (chairmans, Mrs E. Fleming (secretary and treasurer); committee, Mesdames F. S. Barrett, G. Duckmanton, W. Scott, and Mr E. A. Adams. It was decided to begin a reference section in the library. .It was agreed to procure 150 books from the Government Library service for 1941.

PENINSULA A. AND P. ASSOCIATION

A meeting of the committee of the Banks Peninsula Agricultural and Pastoral Association was held at Little River on Saturday evening, the president, Mr N. Craw, presiding. The secretary, Mr H. W. Armitage, presented the interim balance-sheet showing a credit balance of £62. He reported the profit from the gymkhana had been £4l, and the surplus profit from the show, after the payment of £IOO to the patriotic funds, was £2l. Entry fees had increased by £3O, compared witl) the previous year, the increase being mostly accounted for in the horse entries.

DARFIELD RAINFALL

Weather observations in the Darfield district, taken by Mr E. A. Cooney, superintendent of the Selwyn Plantation Board, showed that 6.94 in of rain fell in the district for March. The heaviest fall was on March 18, when 2.05 in fell. A total of 10.45 in of rain fell for the three months, compared with 5.84 for the same period in 1940.

PRESENTATION AT OMIHI

There was a large attendance at a dance held in the Omihi Hall to honour Sergeant Pilot A. R. Campbell, who is on leave. The evening was spent in.dancing. Music was supplied by Miss Dorothy Brady’s Orchestra (Rangiora), and extras by Mrs A. McLachlan. Songs were contributed by Mrs E. Foster, Mrs W. Black, and Mr A. Burke. Mr Topp was master of ceremonies.

In making the presentation of a wristlet watch suitably engraved to the guest of honour, Mr R. Clifford, chairman of the patriotic committee, extended the good wishes of all those present. Other speakers were the Rev. Mr Hay and Mr Topp.

HORORATA MOTHERS’ UNION

At the annual meeting of the Hororata branch of the Mothers’ Union, the officers were re-elected. A short service was conducted in the church by the vicar. An adjournment was made to the parish-room, where Mrs C. Willis, of Christchurch, addressed the meeting after which afternoon tea was served.
