APPEALS HEARD BY BOARD
RESULTS OF YESTERDAY’S CASES An appeal for exemption from territorial service was made . before the Christchurch Manpower Committee Appeal Board yesterday by Arthur Whitney Beals, who said he was an American citizen and therefore was not a member of the reserve. Mr , J. S..Barnett presided, and with him were
Messrs S. L. Wright and G. T. Thurston. Captain G. H. Anderson represented the military authorities. , It was stated that although Beals was born in New Zealand he had executed a declaration of alienage, and this was held to be sufficient to establish that he. was.not a member of the reserve. The appeal was allowed. An appeal was lodged by the Director of National Service on behalf of William Percival Chattcrlon. It was stated that Chatlerton had now been in camp for five weeks and his employer wished him to complete his training. The appeal was dismissed. New evidence was submitted in the appeal of Harold George Hih, farmer, of Killinchy. Originally his training had been postponed to . April 1,; but as a result of consideration of the new evidence the appeal was adjourned sine die. : The following appeals were dismissed subject' to the. recruits, not being called to camp before April 1: Frank William Hewitt, Leonard James Oliver Leybourne, Daniel John Foley, Ashley Owen Le Lievre, James Francis Wright, Phillip M. Humphreys. Phillip Douglas Milne, Martin Jamieson Lewitt, Donald Fraser MacPh.erson. Wilbur Henry Dodge, and Charles ■ Dodsworth Rudd. The appeals of the following recruits were dismissed subject to their ■ not being called to camp before July 1: Herbert. A. Patterson, Mervyn.Fea‘rnley,;Noel Hislop Dutton, and Leicester Arnold Webster. The following appeals were adjourned sine die:—Ralph Jellicoe McConnell, Frederick William Popkin, E. C. H. Bedford., Herbert Henry Harris, Raymond Walker Laird, Gerald Maxwell Turner, J.S. Allen, Thomas Bray, William James Ross, Murray Edwin Scott. Lan Douglas Dick, John Sidney Wolff, and John Michael Beattie. The appeals of the following recruits who have been graded as temporarily medically unfit were , adjourned sine die:—Clarence Aynsley Arras, Alister Campbell, John Cecil Little, and Edward Leo Kinwin. An appeal by. L. J. White, on the grounds of status was allowed, and that• of John, Churchill,, a minister of religion; was' adjourned sine, die. Edward Collins, ‘a • steam presser, and Joseph Parle,: a waterside worker, who have been' called up- for overseas service, had their appeals adjourned sine die.
