MINISTER’S ADVICE TO HOUSEWIVES

EXCEPTION TAKEN BY EG6 PRODUCERS Strong exception to the Minister for Marketing’s advice to housewives to satisfied with smaller supplies of egg and to substitute meat and fruit i them was taken by members of Canterbury District Egg Marketing au visory Committee yesterday morning. The Minister (the Hon. J. G. Barclay . according to a message printed on oaurday, said that he hoped housewiv would remember that unusual 9 ua ft titles cf eggs were required for in armed forces and that they would refrain from forcing up prices by insistently demanding eggs w household purposes. . The committee sent a telegram o protest to the Minister, stating that considered he had inaccurately d scribed the position. ■ , The chairman (Mr T. S. Dove) askea how the. Minister’s advice could possibly help the war effort. Many thousands of men, who had formerly been consumers, were now abroad on a ctiv service. There was net much evidence to show that eggs were served to tne rank and file of the Army as part o their ordinary fare. Between February and August there would, indeed, be the usual seasonal drop in production. But if prices rose they would not necessarily "mean higher returns to producers. Because of the high cost of imported grain, many egg producers all over New Zealand had been forced out of business recently. The net return to one producer he knew for 330 dozen eggs, with a top wholesale price of 2s 3d a dozen, was only Is 5.9 d a dozen. H.M. V. REFRIGERATORS. The heart of a freezer is the compressor. Any loss ; of compression means poor results. The H.M.V. has not got a reciprocating compressor like many others, but is fitted with a rotary compressor. A continuous test of this has been running since 1926. day and night, except fer an annual inspection. This is equal to over 42J years’ household use. but there is no measurable, wear and no loss of compression. MASON, STRUTHERS and CO., LTD. —0
