YACHT TRIP FROM WELLINGTON
SCHOONER SAILED SINGLE-HANDED FOUR DAYS TAKEN IN HEAVY WEATHER Sailed single-handed from Wellington by her owner and skipper, Mr H. F. Lamb, the auxiliary schooner Te Hongi arrived at Lyttelton on Saturday morning, after a strenuous passage, taking four days, in heavy weather.
Last Tuesday at 10' a.m., Mr Lamb set out from the Wellington boat harbour. By 6 p.m. that day he was well across the straits and just south of Cape Campbell, when -he yacht took two heavy seas into the cockpit. The weather had been making up for some time, so the skipper decided it was best to heave to. The seas by this time had become dangerous, and the wind was blowi/ig harder than ever. The yacht was hove-to under her foresail and remained so for nearly 24 hours.
The following afternoon at 5 p.m. the yacht was put on her course again, but on Thursday had to heave to again off Kaikoura for six hours. She arrived off Lyttelton heads at midnight on Friday, and after waiting till daylight sailed up the harbour on urday morning, Mr Lamb said that the Te Hongi behaved admirably during the heavy weather, ■Te Hongi is a marconi-ngged schooner. 43 feet long, with a beam of 10 feet, and drawing six feet of water. The engine is a S horse-power Diesel, and was installed by the owner himself. It may be remembered'that she took part in the centennial ocean race from Lyttelton to Wellington last year.
