FISHING AT ASHBURTON
POOR CONDITIONS IN RIVERS Fe\y fish were caught in the rivers and lakes in the Ashburton County during the week-end. Conditions in the rivers were for the most part unsuitable. Although a number of anglers visited the Rangitata river, the water was discoloured, and only one salmon was caught. There was very little fishing at the Rakaia river, which was slightly more dirty, as it always takes longer to clear. The level of the Ashburton river is low and the mouth is still blocked, preventing any successful fishing. A party which visited Lake Heron on Saturday found the lake perfectly calm, and it was not until Sunday, when a ripple developed, that they were able to obtain a few salmon. The best catch of trout recorded this year at the mouth of the Rakaia river was one of more than 15 pounds, taken on the fly by Mr Ward Langdbn, of Ashburton. The specimen is being stuffed and will shortly be exhibited at Ashburton.
