RANGIORA NOTES PATRIOTIC APPEALS IN DISTRICT The district effort towards the Dominion appeal for £1,000,000 was discussed at a recent meeting of the Sef-ton-Ashley Patriotic Committee. Mr A. Ashworth presided over a large attendance. It was decided to canvass the committee’s area on March 1 and to hold a bazaar on March 14. The Kowai County’s quota in the appeal is £I3OO, qf whicli about £7OO has been collected so far. The Rangiora County Council has decided that in conjunction with the Farmers’ Union it will hold a produce and stock drive in the Rangiora riding of the county on March 6. The council appeals to residents to have gifts ready and thus cause as little delay as possible to collectors. Transport for the collection of goods is required urgently, and offers from owners prepared to make their trucks available will be appreciated. Depots for the receiving of goods are being arranged in the various centres. A similar appeal under the direction of the CustWest Eyreton branch of the Farmers’ Union will be made in the Cust riding later. Books Exchanged The Country Library Service officer visited Rangiora yesterday and issued a new supply of books to the Rangiora Free Public Library. A total of 380 books was exchanged, the new selection including 130 fiction volumes and 250 non-fiction. Home Guard Parades Because the evenings are drawing in the Rangiora unit of the Homo Guard will hold future parades this year on Sunday mornings. The unit will parade at the recreation ground near the river, where there is ample space for training activities. The Rangiora class of non-commissioned officers has held a number of Sunday parades. Visit to Lyttelton Children attending Standards V and VI at the Rangiora District School visited Lyttelton yesterday and spent the day inspecting the harbour, the dredge and tug, and other objects of interest. About 95 children made the trip, which was favoured by beautifully fine weather. Fishing Rivers The Ashley river is still running low and unsuitable for fishing in many parts. Few good catches have been taken from it lately. Two Rangiora anglers made a trip to the Hurunui river during the week-end, but the water was discoloured, and only one or two fish were caught. RANGIORA PERSONAL NOTE Miss A. Fache, librarian of the Rangiora Free Public Library, has returned from a visit to Dunedin, where she attended the Dominion Library Conference.

EMERGENCY SCHEME APPOINTMENTS MADE AT OXFORD In the emergency precautions scheme at Oxford the following appointments have been made:—Controller, the chairman of the County Council; medical and nursing, Dr. W. E. Minty, Miss Skey, Miss Nell, Mesdames J. H. Doak and W. H. Oldman; fire, law, and order, Constable R. Drummond; transport, Messrs T. Doody, C. E. Johnson-, S T. Batchelor, N. Stevenson, E. A. Bowman, and T. Garlick; supply, food, clothing, and accommodation. Messrs L. Watson, J. Squire, C. E. Brown, and Mesdames R. J. Sharpe, C. G. Johnson. R. M. Comyns, and W. H. Knowles; central committee. Messrs P. Fisher, L. Watson, S. C. Batchelor, Dr. W. E. Minty, Constable R. Drummond. Mrs Sharpe, and Miss Skey. The firstnamed in each committee is chairman. AGRICULTURAL CLUBS AT AMURI Mr R. B. Henderson presided $ a meeting of the committee of the Amuri group of the Boys’ and Girls’ Agricultural Clubs. Reports on the vegetable and llrtwor growing competitions among the school children were given by the judges, Messrs K. Dunbar and G. Hueston, who said that a great improvement was noticeable in the vegetable section this year, Mrs R. Grant reported on the chicken-raising projects, which had twice as many entries as in the previous year, with a greatly improved standard of work. Other stock projects will lie judged at the annual show which is to be held at , Rotherham on Friday, March 21,. The following judges for the show were appointed:—Vegetables and fruit. Messrs K. Dunbar and G. Hueston; flowers and decorative section, Miss G. Popplcwcll; lambs, Mj G. Cochrane; calves, Mr T. Harland, jun.; chickcns, Mrs R. Grant; pels, Mr A. Munro; school work, Mr G. Soal; sewing and fancy work, Mrs Emmanuel. Mr S. A. La Roche, agricultural instructor in North Canterbury, was appointed show marshal. WAIAU DOMAIN BOARD ELECTED At a meeting of Waiau residents the folowing were elected as members of the Domain Board for the next seven years:—Messrs C. A. Forbes (chairman). C. H. Higgins, T. H. Belton, G. White. F. McKie. E. A. Robson, and F S. Bowron. Mr G. C. O’Malley was reelected secretary. Reference was made to the excellent work of the retiring chairman, Mr C. H. Higgins. It was reported that the dressing-room'on the football ground had been destroyed by fire in January and a heavy wind had wrecked the football pavilion. It was decided to ask representatives of the football and cricket clubs to meet the board on the domain on Saturday, March 1, to discuss matters concerning the grounds and buildings used by the two clubs PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN’S GUILD AT CHEVIOT The annual meeting of the Knox Presbyterian Ladies’ Guild was held recently, the Rev. F. J. Smith presiding. The following officers were elected: —President, Mrs G. Brown; vice-presi-dents. Mesdames A. M. Hyde, H. Denton, and J. Jackson; secretary, Mrs W. Crampton; treasurer, Mrs T. Stevenson, The guild decided that the proceeds of this year’s work would go towards the general church funds, and a fund to be known as the building fund. Mesdames Brown and Bowen were hostesses. PRESENTATION AT COURTENAY Mr and Mrs M. E. Jenkins entertained many friends at their home, “Wardendale,” Courtenay, on Saturday evening to honour Miss Joan Bedford and Mr Roland Reed, whoso marriage will take place this week. The evening was spent in games, competitions, rriusical items, and community singing. Songs were sung by Miss Pat Clinton, Miss Betty Clinton, and Mr H. H. Barrs, and humorous sketches were given by Mrs C. E. Reid and Mrs J. H. Reid and Mr H. Barrs. Winners of the competitions were Miss J. Bedford. Mrs J. H. Reid, and Miss S. Jarmaq, and Messrs B. Stewart, H. Barrs, and R. Reed. Mr W. E. Jenkins presented the guests of honour with silver fishknives and forks, with the good wishes of those present. Mr R. Reed responded.
