Sargentina. An offer of an oil painting of Sticking Point, Lyttelton, showing the old blacksmith’s shop, as a gift to the council, was received from Mr Jesse Hollobon, Sydenham. The council decided to accept the painting and a resolution of thanks to Mr Hollobon was passed. Sewer for Corsair Bay A decision not to proceed with the laying of a sewer at Corsair Bay until the beginning of the new financial year, was made at the meeting of the Borough Council last night. A tender of £1077 was received from a contracting firm for the work. The Mayor said that there was £250 on the estimates for the work. In the circumstances, although the council had passed the work to be done, councillors would agree that it would be impossible to proceed. Cr. Morris said he was disappointed with the council’s attitude. The council should not be frightened by the job. The council had a duty to the residents of Corsair Bay. Cr. Young supported Cr. Morris, He said that the council should scrap the tender and do the work itself. It was a case of having to cut the cloth to suit the purse, said Cr. Sargentina. Councillors said “go ahead,” but he wanted to know, where was the money to come from? Cr. Foster said the council’s first duty was to the health of the community. The council should proceed with the work.

Cr. Lindsay said the council should drop all other work and put the w'hole staff on to the sewer work.

A motion by the Mayor, that the work be not proceeded with and that a guarantee be given that the work will be the first to be undertaken in the new financial year, was carried, and it was agreed to use the £250 for the purchase of pipes in readiness for the work.
