KEEN RACING AMONG JUNIORS
HANDICAP PROGRAMME AT RUGBY PARK
Competitions among junior athletes is keener this year than for a long time. With so many seniors away on military service the junior runners have had the field almost to themselves at Rugby Park and have delighted spectators with some first-class racing. A series of closely contested finishes was seen at the park on Saturday. Fields were strong in all junior events. Several races were set aside for boys under 17, many of them still at school, and in these some promising performances were recorded. A notable visitor was G. Hunter, the New Zealand high jump champion, who is in the Air Force. He won the open high jump at sft lOjn, and the javelin with 146 ft lin.
N. C Sutton (Greymouth). who was Canterbury junior mile champion last year and later represented Wellington, won both the half-mile and two miles. From 55 yards he ran the half In Imin 55 2-ssec, and from 80 yards he won the two miles in lOmin 12sec.
L. C. Woodward (Technical), striking good early farm, went well over the sprint hurdles. N. E. Lane (Old Boys) ran in this race and again in the quartermile hurdles, which he won easily. Among the prominent junior performers was C J Berryman (Old Boys), who won the 100 yards under 17 in llsec, and the 220 yards in 24 2-ssec. both from scratch.
