NEW BRIGHTON AND THE CITY
TO THS EDITOS 01 THB PEEBB. Sir,—At a recent meeting in New Brighton, about amalgamation with Christchurch, Mr E. Smith, the Mayor, referred to the borough as being at stagnation point. Would Mr Smith tell me on whom can we lay the blame? Is it not a fact that he and his council, having had charge of our affairs over the past years, have put the borough in the almost hopeless position that it is in to-day? The man in the street cannot be blamed. Mr Clark said: “One-third of the borough is reserves.” ' Well, what if It is? Mr Clark knows that if affairs had been administered efficiently today New Brighton would all have been built on, and that the reserves would have been totally inadequate for its population. Wake up, New Brighton, North and South, and save one of the best little spots in New Zealand from giving away its liberty!— Yours, etc. , RATEPAYER NO. 1. New Brighton, December 12, 1940,
