BREAKING-UP CEREMONY At the Sclwyn House School break-ing-up ceremony, held in Jellicoe Hall yesterday afternoon, the chairman of the board of directors, Mr E. J. Chcnnells, announced that in future Selwyn House would be a preparatory school only—the only private preparatory school for girls In New Zealand as far as he knew, although gimilar schools were common in England and , Australia. He asked for the support
of parents in the venture, Miss D. Govan, headmistress of Selwyn House, reviewed the activities of the year, both in studies, swimming, and games.' She expressed gratitude to Miss J. Holderness, former headmistress, to Mr and Mrs Chennells, Mrs Peter Wood, Mrs P. F. Mann, Mrs Norton Francis, Dean Warren, and Archdeacon A. J. Petrie for many kindnesses, and announced that it was proposed to establish a nursery class at the school next year if sufficient support were forthcoming. A pleasing programme was then given by the pupils. Accompanied on the piano by their teacher, Mr Frederick Page, the seniors sang "Jerusalem” (H. Parry), “On Wings of Song” (Mendelssohn), "Come, Let Us All This Day” (Bach). A one-act costume play
of the Victorian era was presented with much success by P. Mann, G. Hamilton. P. Bennett, H. Brooksbank, and B. James, and another play, in which were featured a ribbon dance and a merry-go-ground, was played by N. Cunningham. B. Williams, N. Giles, J. Chennells, J. Brown, D. Wood, B. Mathias, D. Nicoll, P. Blackler, G. Baxter, F. Cracroft Wilson, with V. Dickinson. A. Douglas, M. Mathias, J. Wood, J. Ballantyne, J. Paton, W. Robinson, J. Warren. P. Warren. C. Wilson, A. Averill, J. Bristed. H. Cookson, P. Gould. A. Reid. N. Gough. L. Matson, M. Holliss, L, Macfarlane. F. Macmillan appearing as children of the village.
