RAFFLES FOR PATRIOTIC FUNDS
♦ PRESBYTERIAN ASSEMBLY’S PROTEST (preps association tf.i.px.ram.) PALMERSTON N.. November 13. A protest against the holding of art unions and raffles for patriotic purposes was made at the Presbyterian General Assembly with the passing of I the following resolution:— “Thai this assembly, while recognising the need for a maximum war effort and the raising of funds for a variety of war purposes, discountenances gambling as a means to that end, and expresses regret that (he Government should have increased facilities for such gambling. The assembly urges Presbyterians to refrain from gambling, and to make contributions through other channels than those afforded by art unions, raffles. and kindred schemes.” The Minister for Education will also be asked to fake steps to prevent school children selling raffle tickets. Gifts to Greece.—Their Majesties have sent gifts to the fund being raised by the Lord Mayor of London for the relief of distress in Greece, Queen Mary, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester. the Duke and Duchess of Kent, the Princess Royal, and the Earl of Harewood and the Duke of Connaught haye also sent contributions,—London, November 12.
