NATIONAL SECURITY TAX
TO THE EDITOR OP THE PRESS. Sir, As reported in “The Press" oh Saturday. Mr Nash definitely states that when toe national security tax is removed. each class of taxpayer will have paid in respect of income, for exactly the same number of years. So far,- so. good,: But; in ■ toe event -of
an “other income” contributor dying before the tax is removed, will Mr •Nash make it definite that the executor will not have to pay a further year’s tax on the ground that the tax is last year’s tax. Also, in respect to the social security tax, Mr Nash s departmental officers have always taken the stand that an "other income taxpayer is always a year behind in the payment of the tax, and therefore on his death his executors have to pay a further year’s tax. This is obviously unfair as it haa the effect of imposing the social security tax on the “other income man a year previous to that of the “wage m.n.-Yours, etC " oraE R INCOME. August 26, 1940. TO THE EDITOR OT THE PRESS. Sir,— My income is less than £2OO. When paying my social security tax this month I was told I must pay double the amount I paid in May, and must continue to do so each quarter till further notice. Meantime prices are rising all the time. Of course one grudges nothing if it is to help win the war—but is it? I should be grateful for an explanation.—Yours, etc., SPINSTER. August 26, 1940. TO THE EDITOR OR THE PRESS, Sir,—“B.H.T.” in “The Press” this morning has, like numbers of other taxpayers on incomes other than wages, been disillusioned regarding your statements that the tax was assessed at 9d in the £l. Like him, I had to pay exactly double. In May last I paid a quarterly instalment of £1 8s 6d; last Thursday I paid £2 17s.—Yours, etC ” E.S.C. August 26, 1940.
