REFUSAL TO PAY LEVY
MARRIED WOMAN FINED (paa;s association telegram.) DUNEDIN, August 25. The first case of its kind in New Zealand came before the Magistrate s Court when a married woman. Mary Josephine Porter, was fined £2 for refusal to pay the yearly social security levy of ss. Porter refused on principle. saying that she had no money in her own right and would not ask her husband to pay. The Court pointed out that nearly all married women were in the same position. The husband, who was present, declined to interfere with her decision and the wife was beginning a new argument whether it would be ethical to accept payment by her husband when the Magistrate (Mr H. W. Bundle. S.M.) interrupted to impose the fine, adding that if the 'fee was paid he might reconsider the penalty.
