RUGBY FOOTBALL

deciding senior COMPETITION NEW GRADE FOR LOWER TEAMS After next Saturday’s games, the teams in the Canterbury Rugby Union's senior competition will be divided into two sections, the top six to continue their battle for the senior championship with the points already earned in the competition, and the remaining eight to start "from scratch" in a new senior reserve competition. This decision was made at the meeting of the management committee of the union last evening, when Captain J. U. Mackay proposed the new competition as a means of keeping interest alive among the lower teams. The union had previously decided to draw the six leading teams in a separate group. Captain Mackay suggested that as it would take longei to play a complete round for the senior reserve competition it might be possible to play these games on days when representative fixtures were being held. Mr E. V. Phillips, chairman of the competitions committee, said it should be understood that the union was trying to work out the best system of deciding the senior championship. The method adopted this season might be the standard method for the future. NO FURTHER ACTION TO BE TAKEN ORDEUING-OFF OF SENIOR PLAYER After considering in committee the report of tlie referee (Mr H. T. Coulter) on (lie ordering-ofT of T. C. Metcalfe in tlie Metropolitan v. Combined Services match on Saturday, the management committee of the Canterbury Rugby Union reported last evening that it had been decided to take no further- action against the player. It was considered that being ordered off the field and the attendant publicity constituted sufficient punishment for the player’s offence—persistently disputing the referee’s decision in awarding the final try. A letter will be written to the player advising him of the union’s decision. DRAW FOR SATURDAY UNIVERSITY V.
