CHILD’S DEATH BY DROWNING VERDICTS AT GREYMOUTH INQUESTS A verdict that Leonelle, Taylor, the infant daughter of Mr and Mrs H. A. Taylor, of Lotuku, was accidentally drowned by falling into a pool of water at Moana on July 18 last, was returned by the Coroner (Mr G. G. Chisholm) at an inquest held at Greymouth yesterday. The child, aged one year and 10 months, was playing with other small children at the residence of Mrs C. E. Dense, of Moana, when unnoticed it fell into a small hole in which there was some surface water. The Coroner suggested that the water-hole should be filled in, as young children were still likely to be playing in the vicinity. House Manager’s Death The District Coroner (Mr M. J. Fogarty) yesterday returned the following verdict at the conclusion of an inquest into the death of Arthur Joseph Fraser, house manager at the Grey Hospital, who died on Thursday last, after the administration of an anaesthetic for treatment of a fractured arm suffered when he fell from a ladder;—“ Thai Fraser died at the Grey Hospital on July 25, 1940, from cardiac collapse, following an anaesthetic.” MAGISTRATE’S COURT AT GREYMOUTH COAL MINE INSPECTION BREACH At the weekly sitting of the Magistrate’s Court at Greymouth yesterday, Mr G. G. Chisholm, S'.M., dealt with the following cases:— William Hodgson was convicted and ordered to pay costs, on a charge of failing to carry an oil-flame safety lamp on an inspection of the working place at the Liverpool State Mine. The defendant did not appear. • Mr W. J. Parsonage, Inspector of Goaf Mines, Greymouth, said that the case was brought as a warning to other mining officials in the district. The defendant was a fireman-deputy and it wds his duty to inspect the working places for the possible presence of gas. He took two oil lamps and one electric lamp into the mine, leaving one 11 chains back and the other 30 yards back from the working place, where he was overcome by gas. Evidently the defendant had lost the light of the lamp 30 yards back through gas without being aware of it, or else was negligent in attempting to complete the inspection with the electric lamp. The defendant had suffered physical pain and had lost his position. As a result of the occurrence he would probably be "prevented from obtaining a position as a mine official again.
