LIBRARY DEPOT IN CITY
♦ NEW PREMISES ACQUIRED New premises, which will serve as the headquarters of the Country Library Service and house the War Library Service and which will help to solve a minor book space problem at the public library, have been acquired under lease by the Government, according to a report from the Canterbury Public Library by the librarian (Mr E. J. Bell). The premises are at 5f!5 Colombo street, near the St, Asaph street intersection, where shelf accommodation for about <6OOO books witybe made available. Mr Bell, who is in charge of the distribution of books and other material for Canterbury units of the Army, Navy, and Air Force, said that the organisation was operating smoothly. In the last two months 1500 magazines and 3306 books had been 'distributed. The library at Burnham had received more volumes, a number of good books had been sent to Wigram, and as soon as the Hare wood library was completed a large number of • excellent books would be 'sent there. The books at the public library and those stored by the courtesy of the Christchurch Gas Company would soon be removed to the new premises in Colombo street. It, was hoped that a table and type.Writer might be provided free for this depot, because of the nature of the work being undertaken.
