REDCLIPFS AND SELWYN DRAW TRINITY IN THE LEAD Bv defer.ting University in a ragged oven game. Trinity gained the lead in lhe lu.ekev championship, and is now hall a point ahead of Selwyn and Redcliffs, who linished a fast even game with scores level. Sydenham B showed more dash and beat the club’s A team by 3 goals to 2. and Technical beat the Army team by 9 goals to 5. The following table shows the positions of tlic teams: — Goals W. D. L. F. A. Pts. Trinity .. 7 0 2 25 14 7 Selwyn .. 6 1 2 33 19 6| Redcliffs .. 6 1 2 25 1 6| University .. 4 1 4 18 18 4^ Sydenham B 4 1 4 18 23 4i Technical .. f 3 5 20 29 -- Sydenham A 1 2 6 la 20 2 Army .. 0 0 3 9 25 0 REDCLIFFS (2) V. SELWYN (2) Too fast a pace and lack of ball control were the main faults in the game between Redcliffs and Selwyn. but otherwise the match was keen and exciting. The teams were:— Redclifts —H. Barnhill, S. Bowden, R. Gray, W. Bowden, E. Radcliffe, C. Papps. J. Grimley, J. Barton. N. Bowden, J. Donkin, J. Coleman. Selwyn—R. V. Taylor, S. Andrews, R. Bay, J. Wormald, T. Burtt, M. Watson, A. Pullan, A. Clapshaw, L. Dawe, N. Dean, and R. Lane. With the teams evenly matched the game was fast and exciting and swept up and down the field with every player striving his utmost. More attention to ball control would have made the game a brilliant exhibition of hockey, but the pace was too hot and players frequently lost control when an a scoring position. Offside by the left wing lost Redclifts several good chances in the first half. Orie of the features of the game was the brilliant play of the half lines, which were up to representative standard. The forwards were well and judiciously supplied with the ball, and attacks were broken up in good style. The two centres, T. Burtt for Selwyn and E. Radcliffe, opened the game up well, and while W. Bowden played at his best on Redcliffsright he was evenly matched by J. Wormald. Both sets of backs were good, but R. Gray’, of the Redcliffs side, was outstanding. In addition to defending his own side of the field he covered S. Bowden with .good effect. A lightning shot by T. Burtt from a penalty corner opened Selwyn’s account well on in the first spell, and on the call of half-time Redcliffs equalised when a penalty goal was awarded Redcliffs for obstruction in a penalty bully by the Selwyn goalkeeper. Another penalty bully against Selwyn was cleared by S. Andrews early in the second half. N. Bowden put Redcliffs ahead by clever play, but Lane and Dean combined to level the scores again three-quarters through the second half. Thereafter the game was a hard battle, with both sets of halves and backs playing great hockey* but no further score was registered. Umpires; Messrs W. Skelton and E. M. Rogers. SYDENHAM B (3) V. SYDENHAM (2) In a mediocre game the Sydenham B team gained a victory over the A team by the odd goal in live. The teams were; Sydenham B—H. V. Rhind, J. Copplestone, J. Connor, N. Hardie. R. Peacock. W. Perry, J. Weir, C. Randle, B. Sloane, A. Woolcock, and R. Williams. Sydenham A—A. Scott, J. Hamilton, G. Small, R. Simpson, B. Hall, E. Densem, C. Dale, T. Riseley, R. Luke, L. Smith, N. Smythe. The B team jumped into its stride from the opening and went through with a rush for Williams to net with a clever angle shot. The play was not of a particularly high standard, but solid defence by the backs kept play in midfield. R. Luke equalised well on on the first spell when the A team forced play into their opponents’ circle. Shortly before half-time Sloane netted and put the B team in the lead. The game was very even in the second half. Sloane increased the B team’s lead midway through the spell, but Riseley netted for the A team shortly after. Although the A team exerted themselves to equalise there was no further score. Umpires: Messrs K. Hamilton and D. H. Low. TRINITY (1) V. UNIVERSITY (0) Trinity registered the only goal of a ragged game that was spoilt <oy -too many breaches by players of both teams, sticks and obstruction being far too frequent. The teams were:— Trinity—D. Lester, E. Parrett, A. McDonald, R. Crocker, D. Loader. T. Brown, K. Seymour, E. Thomas, C. Salomen, E. McCormick. C. Stafford. University—G. Maister, R. Shillito. E. Blackstock. F, Seldom C. V. Walter, E. Fancy, T. Eggleton, S. Scott, W. Johnston, D. Cummack, J. Devereaux. University defence saved the side from defeat, D. Maister and R. Shillito being prominent in many good clearances. C. V. Walter dominated the play in the half line and overshadowed Seldon and Fancy. The forward line was wea£, especially on the right, where Eggleton failed to field the ball. The frequent penalties for minor breaches upset the Trinity team, which played below its usual standard. Parrett and McDonald put up a solid defence and kept Trinity’s • goal Intact, and the half line was more than equal to that of University. C. Stafford is developing into a left wing of class and should attract attention before long. The only score of the game was registered In the first spell, when Salomen cut in to net. Umpires: Messrs F. A. Iggo and C. H. Franklin. TECHNICAL (9) ▼. ARMY (5) Technical had little difficulty in defeating an Army team in a high-scoring match by a margin of four goals. The teams were:— . Technical—F. Kiddey, E. Rogers, N. Soper, K. Beattie, W. Cole, R. Doidge, E. Worsley, A. Manning, A. Norman, R. Leney, S. Ballinger. Army—C. Draper, L. G. Irving, E. L. Reeves, L. Herd, C. M. Canny, L. L. Scott, I. G. McCullogh, R. T. McHolm. I. G. Ryburn, W. B. McFarlane, and J. F. C. Coatsworth. The outstanding feature of the game was the superiority of the forwards oyer the backs, which led to high scores being registered. A. Norman was in scoring mood and registered three In the first spell, and Leney, Manning, and Worsley also found the net. McHolm scored both Army goals in the first half. In the second half Norman again registered and Leney notched two goals, and McCullogh (2) and McHolm scored for the Army team. , Umpires: Messrs H. Boniface and E.
