ENGAGEMENTS
The engagement is announced of Joan, only daughter of Mr and Mrs G. F. Griffin, Blenheim, to Stanley James, eldest son of Mr and Mrs W. E. J. Maxwell, St. Albans, Christchurch. Mr and Mrs J. F. Blakemore, “Rawcliffe,” Springston, announce the engagement of their eldest daughter, Phyllis Doreen, to Ronald James, youngest son of, Mrs J. A. Crockett, Riccarton, and the late Mr J. T. Crossan. The engagement is announced of Clive Lloyd, younger son of Mr and Mrs T. E. Fisher (Office road, Merivale), to Joan Frances, younger daughter of Mr and Mrs R. I. Chamberlain, Rata street, Riccarton. Mr and Mrs E. V. Chaffey (Carlton Mill road, Merivale) announce the engagement of their younger daughter, Ngaio, to Noel, eldest son of Mr and Mrs T. C. Lothian, Mont Albert, Melbourne, Australia. SOCIAL AT KAIAPOI About £8 was realised for the Red Cross fund as a result of a successful hostess social organised by the Kaiapoi sub-centre of the Red Cross Society and held in the Orange Hall, Kaiapoi. The hostesses were Mesdames J. F. Calcutt, G. Hirst, J. Sorrell, H.. C. Watson, A. S. Palmer, R. Barnard, S. J. Richards, W. C. Tourell, P. McNab, H. H. Blackwell, H. P. Todd, M. Greenwood, H. W. Childs, W. G. Wylie, H. J. Mclntosh, Misses S. E. Evans and G. Martyn. During the afternoon musical items were given by Mesdames Merritt, D. Ross, and N. J. Stevenson, a character dapee by Misses P. Dixon and E. Gray. A mannequin parade was staged by Messrs Blackwells, Ltd., the commentator being Mrs E. J. Corcoran. The mannequins were Mesdames G. Aitken, J: F. Calcutt. V. Pulley, B. Pearce, J. D.. McMullan, and I. Yellowlees. Music for the parade was played by Mrs S. J. Richards. A competition was won by Mrs J. D. McMullan and Mrs R. W. Wylie. ARTS BALL ARRANGEMENTS
The 1940 arts ball, which will be held’ at the Winter Garden on July 5, is likely, to be even more successful than usual, as the committee has decided to give all profits to the Sick, Wounded, and Distress Fund. The theme, “Monkey Business at the Silly Symphony Party,” has aroused much interest, and offers a wide scope for fancy dress costume. Walt Disney’s creations will be well to the fore, and a good evening’s entertainment is assured. MOUNT NESSING WOMEN’S INSTITUTE Miss D. Austin presided over a good attendance of members at the June meeting of the Mount . Nessing Women’s Institute. The home science lectures were discussed, and it was decided to have the tutor at the September meeting. The appeal for clothes for refugee children was well responded to, quite a large collection of useful articles of clothing having been received. Garments for remaking were also distributed to members. A soldier’s parcel was forwarded, and it was agreed to send one monthly. An article on Madame Curie was read by Mrs H. D. Muir. Competitions were won as follows:—Soldier’s scarf, Mrs A. J. Glass 1, Mrs H. Fisher 2, Mrs S. H. Hubbard 3; queen cakes, Mrs Muir 1, Miss M. Fraser and Miss J. Muir (equal) 2; bloom (cluster). Miss J. Muir (pentstemon) 1, Miss K. Fraser (geranium) 2, Miss M. Fraser (linaria) 3; tsingle), Miss J. Muir (poppy) 1, Mrs Stevenson (Christmas rose) 2, Mrs Austin (anemone) 3. Hostesses were . Mesdames C. F. Maitland and W. Simpson, Miss K. Fraser acted as pianist, and Mrs J. C. Macaulay" and Miss C. Irving had charge of the sales table.
