MAGNA CARTA
TO . THE;, EDITOR OF THE PRESS ’ ’Sir, — In reply to “Britisher,” may I point out that a great deal of historical research, has been made on Magna Carta since the days of Hallam and Green, notably by A F. Pollard, Professor of English History in the University of London and Fellow of All .Souls’ College, Oxford. I would recommend that “Britisher” consult a reputable history text bopk and com-
pare the clauses of Magna Carta set out in it with those he gives in - his letter. He. will, I hope, then realise that his ideas on Magna Carta are anything but correct. In reference to the final paragraph of “Britisher’s” letter “that a lot of our lecturers and professors belittle our charters and institutions.” it is an excellent example of those loose dogmatic statements, which cannot be substantiated, so often made by correspondents of the type of “Britisher. ’ Had he taken the trouble to read- the report of my lecture he would have seen that I upheld our British institutions, explaining that a people educated to the ideals and principles they stood for was an essential to their proper functioning.—Yours, .etc., A. J. CAMPBELL. June 20, 1940.
