SICK, WOUNDED AND DISTRESS FUND

♦ PROGRAMME OF COMING EVENTS Licensed Trades’ Effort The war emergency committee of the licensed trades will conduct a special drive in the city to-day in aid of the Sick, Wounded, and Distress Fund. At all the principal corners in the city, tickets in the raffle for the V-8 motor-car will be on sale. In the evening attractive entertainment will be provided for the public. At 7 o’clock a procession of motor-cars, headed by a Highland pipe band, will leave King Edward Barracks, and will proceed along Cashel street to High street, thence to the Square, where the band will play selections outside Warner’s Hotel. Concert parties, which will include some of the leading talent in Christchurch, will also be stationed on trucks at various points in the city. These will be at the corner of Cashel and Colombo streets, at the United Service Hotel corner, at the Beresford corner, in Victoria square, and the corner of High and Cashel streets. The committee’s headquarters for the day will be at a shop in Worcester street between the Square and the Avon Theatre. The telephone number will be 38-613. All those people who have offered their services as ticket sellers, and who have not been advised of their stations and the times they are to be on duty, are asked to report at headquarters 15 minutes before the timethey indicated on their replies to the committee. Master Butchers’ Effort A part of the master butchers’ war effort will be a grand patriotic concert in aid of the Sick, Wpunded, and Distress Fund, to be held in the Civic Theatre to-morrow at 8 p.m. The programme will include Highland dancing, community singing, tap-dancing, an organ solo, and items by leading Christchurch artists. Box plans for reserved seats will be at the D.1.C., until noon to-morrow, and thereafter at 3ZB. The minimum charge for reservation is Is 6d. The £IOO alluvial gold art union will be drawn at the concert, and the result of the weight-guessing competition announced. Repertory Society’s Play The Canterbury Repertory Theatre Society will present the play “Dear Octopus” on Monday, as an extra night, in aid of the effort being made by the Merivale sub-centre of the Red Cross for the Sick, Wounded, and Distress Fund. Red Cross Shop The Merivale sub-centre of the Red Cross, with Mrs A. K. Warren in charge, will conduct the Red Cross Shop in Webley’s buildings to-day, and not the St. Albans sub-centre as previously stated. There will be a variety of fresh food on sale, including cakes, jam, meat, and groceries. Plants and flowers will also be on sale. Postal Employees’ Effort Representatives of all branches of the Post and Telegraph Department in Christchurch unanimously agreed at a recent meeting to offer whole-hearted co-operation to the Canterbury Provincial Patriotic Fund in assisting with the raising of funds for patriotic purposes. The postal community in Christchurch numbers approximately 1000 employees, and their own effort, which will be launched shortly, will have a decidedly postal atmosphere and be of a sufficiently attractive nature substantially to supplement the extensive effort which is being made by other sections of the community. Bridge Party A bridge and mahjong party will be held at Death’s on Saturday night, June 29, in aid of the funds of the Christ-

church sub-centre of the Red Cross Society. Mrs A. J. Benzie will be m charge of the bridge and Mrs R. A. Home of the mahjong. Tables may be booked at the United Service Hotel and the New City Hotel. FINAL FIGURE ONE-DAY CAR RAFFLE STOCK AND STATION AGENTS RAISE £4782 The final figure for the one-day car raffle organised by the Stock and Station Agents’ Sick and Wounded Fund Committee has been announced by Mr Allan L. Matson, the chairman of the committee. .The proceeds, which have been handed over to Mr E. xl. S. Hamilton, secretary of the fund, amounted to £4782 Os 9d. expenses totalling £l4O. The car will be presented at 7.15 this evening to Mr Bernie O’Shaughnessy, of Springfield, from the balcony of the United Service Hotel. The presentation will be made by the DeputyMayor (Mr J. S. Barnett) in the absence of the Mayor (Mr R. M. Macfarlane), who is in Wellington. The car was given by various freezing companies and meat export companies, including the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company, the New Zealand Refrigerating Company, Sims, Cooper and Company, Nicoll Bros., and the North Canterbury Freezing Compaly.
