AUCKLAND FIGURES (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) AUCKLAND, June 10. Large numbers of recruits continue to come forward in the Northern Military District for the 2nd New Zealand Expeditionary Force. Last week s total was 544, a reduction on the previous week’s figure of 719; but still much higher than any during the months following the initial call, and preceding recent events in Europe, ine present rate of recruiting is shown by the fact that in three weeks more than 1600 men have volunteered, a total that previously was taking about two months to find. . TERRITORIAL SERVICE CONDITIONS FOR TEACHERS Conditions for teachers and training college students applying for leave for training with the Territorial Forces have been set out in a circular from Mr A. F. McMurtrie, Assistant Director of Education, received by the Canterbury Education Board. All leave will be without pay, the circular states. Teachers’ superannuation rights will be protected. Contributions of those serving will be paid by the Government, at the normal rate, though the Government will not be responsible for any arrears. Social security contributions (wage tax) will not be payable on military pay received by teachers. Teachers will themselves be responsible for all premiums on life and other insurance policies, but where it is thought financial hardship will arise, application should be made to the Soldiers’ Financial Assistance Board. As with teachers absent with the military forces, rights of promotion and salary increments will be protected, and the period of training will count as service as a teacher for all purposes. “It is understood,” the circular states, “that the military pay to teachers serving with the Territorial Forces will oe on the same basis as for those serving with the Expeditionary Force while in New Zealand. In addition, where a teacher is not required to go into camp it is understood a sustenance allowance of 2s 6d a day will be payable. Any teacher who considers he will suffer financial hardship by his service in the Territorial Forces should apply to the Assistance Board.” TERRITORIALS’ ENTHUSIASM A.S.C. WAITING LIST “The enthusiasm for Territorial training nowadays is such that the 3rd Composite Company, New Zealand Army Service Corps, has a waiting list; but some of those on the waiting list have declined to wait and on parade nights they have come along and carried out training in civilian clothes, despite the fact that they are not ‘on the strength’,” says a statement from the Southern Command. “Such enthusiasm makes it obvious that, when the Army Service Corps commences its new year of training in July, the already high standard of efficiency achieved will be fully maintained. “There have been some further extensions of training in this unit by the addition of special lectures dealing with the construction arid use of the combustion engine, together with such matters as the theory and construction of gears. To the uninitiated, such lectures might seem rather technical; but they have proved invaluable in. teaching men to look for faults in vehicles and to effect quick and reliable repairs.” SCOTTISH REGIMENT’S WORK “On Sunday, the officers and noncommissioned officers of the Christchurch Company, New Zealand Scottish Regiment, carried out an interesting day’s work on the Cashmere Hills,” says a statement from the military authorities. “Map-reading and tactical exercises constituted the day’s work. “Experience gained in a field day of this nature is exceedingly valuable to the training of the unit, especially at the present time, when the Scottish Regiment, in common with all territorial units, has had its ranks depleted through members joining up with the forces proceeding overseas. - New recruits have taken the places, of these men, and every endeavour is being made to bring them up to a high stage of efficiency.”
