o EARLY IMPORTATION FROM AUSTRALIA ALLOCATION FOR SOUTH CANTERBURY [From Our Own Reporter.] TIMARU, June 10. .Twenty thousand sacks of oats and SOOO tons of barley will be imported from Australia at an early date to relieve the winter feed shortage, according to information received by Mr T. D. 'Burnett, M.P. ‘ The decision was rnade. Mr Burnett states, after he and Mr D. C. Kidd. M.P., had waited on the Department of Agriculture to emphasise the seriousness, of the position lii South Canterbury in relation to feed for stock. , ' 4< A quantity of 3300 sacks of oats has been allocated for Timaru, which will be the distributing centre for all the territory from Oamaru to Ashburton,” said Mr Burnett.' ‘‘The shipment is due in Timaru on June 26, and the retail price to farmers will be 4s Id a bushel on trucks. Three* thousand tons of Australian barley, iof which the Timaru allocation is 600 tons, will arrive here during the second week in July. The cost to the farmers, through the firms, will be 3s 8d a .bushel for Cape barley and. 4s 3d a bushel for, English barley. ' * “The heads of the Department of Agriculture are considering to what extent the feeding of potatoes to stock would be advisable. They admit that there is something like 10,000 tons of surplus available, a great proportion of which was grown in South Canterbury. They admit that,many farmers are not attracted by the proposition, but the experts say it is well worth consideration in the present feed Situation.” "
