AT HOME

PARTY AT SHIRLEY GOLF CLUB’S GUESTS At the invitation of the president, committee, and members of the Christchurch Golf Club, many guests attended a very enjoyable at home held at the club house, Shirley, last night. In strong contrast with the damp and dreary conditions prevailing out-of-doors, the club house was bright and cheery and the party was particularly pleasant. The dining-room and common room were used for dancing, the wide verandah was closed in and comfortably furnished as a lounge, supper was served in the men's smoking-room, and for those not wishing to dance bridge tables were arranged in the women’s sitting-room upstairs. The supper table was gay with pink chrysanthemums and large bowls of hydrangeas, chrysanthemums and autumn foliage, artistically arranged, decorated the reception rooms. Music was played by the Wigram Air Force orchestra, by kind permission of Wing Commander G. S. Hodson. Members of the organising committee were Mesdames M. H. Godby, E. J. Pumphrey, S. P. Godfrey, A. B. Boon, Misses Maberley Beadel, Helen Buchanan, Judith Firth, Messrs F. S. Taylor (chairman), I. D. Wood, O. A. Y. Johnston, G. N. Francis, J. O. D. Ward, I. M. Godby, and B. G. Donovan. Lady Ward, wife of the president, wore a frock of black crepe, patterned in rose, green, and beige in floral design; Mrs R. W. Morgan, wife of the captain of the club, wore a gold and ivory brocaded satin frock; Mrs Godby,, captain, Christchurch Ladies’ Golf Club, black flat crepe trimmed with deep black fringe; Mrs Pumphrey, black taffeta with short puffed sleeves and large pink roses on the bodice; Mrs Boon, brown taffeta with spray of pink flowers and coatee of gold sequins; Mrs George Francis, Edwardian frock of white taffeta, the bodice veiled with black tulle and the skirt flounced with the tulle; Mrs Taylor, midnight-blue chiffon, with bodice and hem studded with diamente; Mrs Ivan Wood, honey-coloured chiffon mounted on honey-coloured taffeta and patterned with groups of white cire spots; Miss Buchanan, striped frock in shades of green, rose and mastic.
