TURF GOSSIP Reminder Acceptances for the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s autumn meeting next Saturday will close at 9 p.m. tomorrow. A change has been made 111 the order of events as set out in the original programme, the Doncaster Handicap, the concluding event, being transposed with the sixth race, the Rosewill Hack Handicap. Sound Breeding Homing, winner of the Trial Plate at Waimate on Saturday, was bred at the Elderslie Stud for Mr E. Steele, of Queensland, who purchased the property last year. Her dam, Homedale, is by Rossendale from Hasten Home, by Holiday House, and she figured as a big winner in Australia, her successes including the V.R.C. Batman Stakes, A.J.C. Final Handicap, and Mooney Valley Cup. Home Secretary a winner at his first start in Melbourne, is by Solicitor-General from Homedale, and cost his present owner, Mr A. Crofts. 650 guineas as a yearling at Trentham. Attracted Much Attention NorSe, runner-up to Homing, was bred by his owner, Mr A. S. Elworthy. and could claim to be one of the bestlooking young horses seen out at Saturday’s meeting. He is a well-grown chestnut three-year-old by’ Valkyrian from Flourish, from whom Mr Elworthy bred Royal Buck and Velvet, who won jumping races for him. Norse has only had two races, and has thus been given every chance. On Saturday the merit of his performance was enhanced by the fact that he stood flat* footed at the start and gave the leaders a substantial break, and it was only in the last stride that he submitted to defeat. Admiralty, an older halfbrother by Lord Warden to Norse, was bracketed with him in the race. He was acquired some weeks back from Mr Elworthy by Mr R. W. Lewis, of Waimate, better known as the owner of Billy Boy. Whilse Norse can claim some aristocratic appearance, Admiralty is of the gross type, and his peculiar combination of roan and chestnut colouring, together with a pronounced white face and nose, will always make him prominent on a racecourse. No doubt he will be later tried out by Mr Lewis as a jumper. Waimate Cup Failures Two big disappointments in the Waimate Cup were Cape Gabo and Balmenter. Both were slow to find their feet, and seemed to be in trouble thereafter, attempts to improve their positions at various stages meeting with set-backs. Hanlon also appeared to have a rocky passage, and then finished very fast. Another in Studley Royal would no doubt have offered some danger if he had not been asked to race over a mile under high-weight conditions a little over an hour earlier. After getting away badly mainly through his own fault, he ran to the front passing the half mile and was still in charge entering the straight, but naturally he could not go on. Racing horses twice during a day with only a little breathing space in between appears to be becoming common at South Island meetings. The procedure may be advisable when short courses have to be tackled, and a case in point was provided on Saturday by Aravane, who, after winning over six furlongs, came out again two hours later and won over seven furlongs. Staying Ability Aravane is one of the few of Weathervane’s progeny at present racing. Her dam, Miss winstone, is by Tractor from Lady Winston by Vice Admiral. Aravane’s only previous win this season was at Cromwell in March, when he won over a mile. He is engaged at the South Canterbury fixture on Saturday, and if reserved for the middle distance hack event, he will be an interesting competitor, as the ability to stay on won him both races on Saturday. A Profitable Circuit Roy Bun added to his good record in recent weeks by a comfortable win in the Marlborough Cup on Saturday On the previous Saturday he won the Nelson Cup, the stake for which carried a canteen of cutlery for Roy Bun’s breeder-owner, Mr T. E. Coates, of Greymouth, and also a silver-mounted toilet set, given by the gatekeepers on the course, for Roy Bun’s rider, the Riccarton apprentice, M. Hollands. Since the Easter racing started on the West Coast, Roy, Bun has won five races and £448 in stakes. Baby Bun. dam of Roy Bun, has been difficult to get in foal in recent years, and Mr Coates recently presented her to her old trainer, T. R. George, who intends to mate her with.
