DUNEDIN BOY KILLED

LORRY STRIKES YACHT ON ROAD THREE MEN INJURED (VBBSB ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) DUNEDIN. April 21. A 14-year-old schoolboy was killed instantaneously, and three men were injured, in an unusual accident that occurred in Macandrew Bay at about 5.45 on Saturday evening, when a motor-truck which was proceeding towards Dunedin struck a 14-foot sailing boat that was being dragged across the road into Howard street. After striking the yacht, the truck veered across the road and capsized over the sea wall into the water. The victims of the accident were:— Killed lan Robert. Sullivan, aged 14, of Hazel avenue, Dunedin.’ .. Injured Frank Sturmer, married, of Macandrew Bay, injuries to left leg and shock. John Baillie, 650 Cumberland street, shock and cuts on his arms. Alexander Geddes, of 234 Hanover street, lacerated hand and shock. Sullivan, in company with two youths, William Trotter and Charles Robinson, was assisting Stunner to drag his sailing boat across the plain highway. The boat was mounted on a trolley and Sullivan and Sturmer were pushing near the stern of the yacht when a motor-truck, driven by James McNulty, of Dunedin, struck the boat aft. Sullivan received severe injuries and must have died, instantaneously. Sturmer was not seriously injured, but was removed to the Dunedin Hospital. After the impact the truck , veered across the road and overturned into the water. The driver escaped injury, but his two passengers, Baillie and Geddes, had to be taken to hospital,where they were admitted at 7 o’clock. Visibility was stated to have been good at the time of the accident. An inquest on Sullivan was opened before Mr H. W. Bundle, Coroner, this afternoon, and after evidence -of identification had been given by the youth’s father, it was adjourned sine die. Fatal injuries were received by, a boy on a farm at Whatawhata this morning, when he became entangled in the belting of a milking machine. He was swung off his feet and dashed against the floor and the wall. The victim .was James Russel, aged 14, a Whatawhata boy. . A motor-cyclist, Patu Dibble, aged 19, of Tikltlki, was killed yesterday afternoon when he collided with a car on a bend a few miles north of Te Puia. Moana Rangi, who was riding on the pillion of the machinq, is in the Te Puia Hospital with both legs broken. The occupants of the car were uninjured. DEATH IN DENTIST’S CHAIR (PRESS AB&OCrATIOE TELE OB AM.) AUCKLAND. April 21. Collapsing under an anaesthetic while in a dentist’s chair, Gordon Samuel Wing, married, aged 38, died on Friday. An inquest was opened on Saturday and was adjourned. BODY OF SWIMMER FOUND IN HARBOUR (rasas association telegram.) AUCKLAND. April 21. The body of a man, later found to be that of Arthur Sandiford, aged 57. married, of Mount Roskill. clad in' swimming trunks, was discovered lying on a raudbank a quarter of a mile from the shore at Blockhouse Bay on Saturday. Sandiford’s car was parked in its usual parking place about a chain from the water. His clothes and personal effects were in the front seat, Sandiford left his home to go for a swim, as was his usual practice. His family became alarmed when he did not return for breakfast an hour later, and inquiries were begun. Shortly befor 3 o’clock a man who had been working on his boat on the beach a body lying on the mudbank and informed the police. Sandiford was a strong swimmer, but had been complaining of pains in the region of the heart for some time. . RUNAWAY HORSE INJURES BOY (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) ■ • V AUCKLAND, April 21. Serious head injuries and concussion were -suffered by a schoolboy. Patrick Sharp, aged 15, a son of Mrs Sharp, of Mount Wellington, when a horse he was riding bolted and threw him against a telegraph, pole this morning. The boy was taken to the -Auckland Hospital. His condition is regarded as being critical. An eyewitness of the accident stated that Sharp’s horse, after running away, collided with another and then lurched into a pole.
