ROTATIONAL SPELLING

RUNHOLDERS MAKE SUGGESTION RESTORING HIGH-COUNTRY PROPERTIES Rotational spelling and reduction of stocking were recommended by the high-country runholders as a practical step towards restoring the high country, after a conference with Government and other experts at the conclusion of the conference at Lake Tekapo. It was recommended that the proposed high-country land board should give assistance in this direction by reducing rents proportionately. A wide range of subjects was covered in the discussions with the! experts, and representatives 'of both experts and runholders agreed that each could learn much from such conferences. The hope was expressed that they should become-annual fixtures. The following motion was carried:— “This, meeting of runholders, after conference with the heads of the agriculture and scientific research department, believes that the greatest practical step that cohld be taken towards arresting deterioration and conserving the sheep carrying capacity of the high country is the introduction of rotational spelling and/or understocking. It therefore urges that in all applications to the proposed high-country land board, assistance in the way of reduction of rent should be given to compensate for reduced stocking.”
