RANGIORA NOTES SUCCESS IN M’INTOSH SHIELD CONTEST Rangiora has beaten Kaiapoi in the inter-borough Mclntosh Shield competition for 1939-40, but the final total of points is not yet available. Rangiora held the shield two seasons ago, but lost it to Kaiapoi last season. Presented in 1925, the shield is for annual competition between sports teams representing Rangiora and Kaiapoi boroughs. Matches are held in 12 sports, the season ending in April each year. The donors were Messrs R. Mcnltosh (then Mayor of Rangiora) and H. Mclntosh (then Mayor of Kaiapoi) . Home Nursing Classes Home nursing classes will be started shortly by the Rangiora sub-centre of the Red Cross Society. These will be the first sub-centre classes to be held in the town, although about 11 persons attended a recent course of lectures given at Fernside, and will receive certificates at a function this week. Mrs L. M. King will be the lecturer in Rangiora. Attention to Greens Greens used by Rangiora bowling and croquet clubs are receiving attention now that the season has closed, and they should be in good playing order for the beginning of next season. Members of the bowling club have been busy for the last two Saturday afternoons cutting the surface of their green with a special apparatus, and seed, top-dressing, and manure will be sown before the green is left for the winter. The croquet lawns will be treated with the cutting machine this week. PERSONAL NOTES RANGIORA Mr H. Rands (Ashburton), who has been visiting his son, Mr C. Rands, at Rangiora, left on Saturday evening for Wellington. Mr L. Harper, of Waikuku Beach, is a patient in the Christchurch Hospital, where he underwent ain operation. He is making good progress towards recovery. Mrs C. Rands will leave to-day to visit her daughter, Mrs R. B. Lane (Waimate). She will return to Rangiora at the end of the week. Mr John Baragi, of Fiji, was the preacher at the Rangiora Methodist Church yesterday morning. He is on his way to India to enter a theological college in Calcutta. CHEVIOT Mr C. Dierck was elected at a public meeting recently to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Mr G. Telfer from the McKenzie Domain Board. T. Jennings placed a wreath beneath the roll of honour. Mr E. Withers hung a wreath on the roll of honour at the Methodist Church during the morning service, and Mr E. James laid a wreath in the Sunday school. Arrangements for the parade in Rangiora on Anzac Day follow the usual custom. Returned men, territorials lodge members, representatives of local bodies and school children will march from the club-rooms to the Town Hall, where an address will be given by Colonel S. D. Mason, camp commandant at Burnham. The service will be conducted by members of the Ministers’ Association. Wreaths will later be laid at the cenotaph. A service will be held in the St. John’s Anglican Church before the parade. MINIATURE RIFLES HALDON CLUB Mr J. W. D. Hall presided at the annual meeting of .the Haldon Miniature Rifle Club. RETURNED SOLDIERS’ SUB-BRANCH CHANGE OF NAME TO ELLESMERE A decision to change the name of the sub-branch from Southbridge to Ellesmere was made at the annual meeting of the Southbridge sub-branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association, over which Mr T. J. Carter presided. Messrs A. E. Haynes and D. W. Russell, of the Christchurch executive, were present and gave addresses. An oak clock was presented to Mr H. G. Hubbard, a member of the branch since its inception, and a former president, who has left the district to reside in Christchurch. Several members spoke of his enthusiastic work. Th~ report gave the membership as 68, an increase of 14 from the previous year, and described the work of the branch in providing cottages for returned men. Officers elected were:—Patron, Captain A. ASSOCIATION COMPLAINT OF DELAY IN HORSE EVENTS In a letter read at a meeting of the Ellesmere Agricultural and Pastoral Association, Mr W, McLachlan presiding, Mr J. G. Fiecken mentioned complaints he had heard at the last show about too much time being taken up with horse events in the ring, causing the parade to be too late. It was stated by members that delays were difficult to avoid in a oneday show, because of some exhibits being entered in several classes. The letter was referred to', the, light horse committee for consideration. Reporting upon improvements at the Show Ground, the president said: that trees damaged by stock last year had made a fair recovery. The Ellesmere Young Farmers’ Club had offered to plant 30 native trees, and these would be placed on the right of the entrance gates. A recommendation that the names of judges should be published before the closing of: entries was held over for consideration by the new committee after the annual meeting next month. SELWYN COUNTY COUNCIL At the monthly meeting of the Selwyn County Council there were present; Crs. W. Gilmour (chairman), J. J. Allan, E. A. Duncan, K. W. J. Hall, T. P. Hight, T. E. Pearson; W. Stone, and D. W. Westehra. A motion of sympathy with the Government iri the death of the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. M; J. Savage, was passed, members standing in. silence. . It was decided that the council apply to the Oil Fuel Controller for an allowance of one gallon of petrol for each member attending council meetings. : Accounts amounting 'to £92 10s 5d were passed for. payment. . : The question -of a- stone rake- for the disposal of large stones on county roads was discussed. It was decided that the.plant committee be authorised to purchase a suitable stone rake. The clerk was instructed to write to ratepayers whose current rates have not been paid that legal proceedings will be taken to recover these rates if they are not paid by April 30.

CHEVIOT PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN’S GUILD The annual meeting of _ the Cheviot Presbyterian Women’s Guild was held .recently. . A review of the ’year’s work showed a satisfactory credit balance.
