SANDERS CUP

AUCKLAND WINS TWO RACES CANTERBURY NOW SECOND ON POINTS EVENTS SAILED IN LIGHT WEATHER

IPBIBB ASSOCIATION TBLBGBAM." '. WELLINGTON. January 16. Caress (Auckland), with two wins to her credit at the end of the second day's racing for the Sanders Cup yachting trophy to-day. is in a likely position to win the trophy. Points gained so far are:— Auckland .. • • "11 Canterbury .. •• ** ?S Wellington .. •• • " i? Southland .. •• " = Otago •• ■• " , At the end of the second race the points were:— Canterbury .. •• "it Auckland .. •■ ** ?? Southland .. •• ' " J Otago •• •• •• * ' Wellington .. •• ■■ *

The light southerly weather to-day suited Auckland. Caress is beautifully finished and well suited to light weather, and the crew seems to be at its. best when there is not too much wind. Canterbury and Wellington are more at home in a strong breeze. . The Southland boat surprised yachtsmen by putting up excellent performances in the two races to-day, and with more competition in her home port would probably be up with the leaders all the time The Second Race Auckland won the second Sanders Cup race by a minute from; Canterbury., with Southland third, Wellington fourth, and Otago fifth. This morning's race was sailed over a triangular course, three times round, in a moderate south-easterly breeze. Canterbury and Southland carried three men, the others four. Over-eagerness caused Auckland to beat the gun, and they were recalled. They were then last to cross the starting line, but by the end of the first leg were leading Wellington, Southland, Canterbury, and Otago. The last-named set their spinnaker at the start and had trouble with it. They lost time which they never made up. Finishing times were:—

hj. m. s. Auckland .. 1 28 42 1 Canterbury .. 1 29 42 2 Southland .. 1 30 38 3 Wellington .. 1 32 4 4 Otago .. 1 34 43 o Third Race in Afternoon The third Sanders Cup race-was held in the afternoon, and sailed over a windward and leeward course. Otago was in the best position at the start, followed by Auckland, Wellington, Southland, and Canterbury. Auckland reached the leeward mark first, rounding 30 seconds ahead of Southland, Otago, Canterbury, and" Wellingtort. On the beat back Southland and -Otago kept in toward the inner harbour, and the others worked out towards the middle. There was more wind out in the harbour, and when the weather mark was reached Auckland was further in the lead. Wellington rounded second, and then Canterbury and Southland. There was no change during the remainder of the race. The finishing times and placings were:—

hj. m. s. Caress (Auckland) .. 4 29 52 1 Kitty (Wellington) .. 4 31 31 2 Ariki (Canterbury) .. 4 34 46 3 Vprena (Southland),.. 4 35 45 - 4 Evelyn (Otago) *.. 4 36 12 5

WEATHER AGAINST ARIKI SECOND AND THIRD PLACES GAINED BOTH RACES KEENLY CONTESTED I [THE PRESS Special Service]

WELLINGTON, January 16. The light weather did not suit Ariki, the Canterbury defender of the Sanders Cup. to-day, and she could gain only second place in the second race and third place in the third. Monday's fresh northerly suited her very well, and should the wind be heavy for to-morrow's racing sne should have an excellent chance of pulling off both races. In this afternoon's race her skipper, Lr. Brasell, decided to carry four men, and this spoilt his chances. R. Priddy and A. Olsen are each 13 stone, and the boat carried too much weight. The other crews were watching Ariki closely before the Bve minute flag went up, and when he picked up his fourth man they did likewise. . , » , In the second race, this morning, Auckland, in spite of having to cross the starting line a second time through beating the gun, established an early lead and was never headed. Canterbury and Southland were the only two boats to carry three men. Brasell had his boat over the line first, but dropped back to fourth on a close lead to Fraser Rock, Auckland. Wellington, and Southland passing him. Running down to the mid-harbour mark Ariki overtook Southland, but could not catch the other two boats. - Approaching the end of the first lap Auckland and Canterbury came well inshore close together, but Canterbury could not get through to lead. Brasell had to go about to make the mark. The positions were unchanged during .the remainder of the race. Last Over the Line at Start Canterbury was last over the line at the start of the afternoon race. During the run down to the leeward mark Ariki gained practically nothing, rounding in fourth place, but only 36 seconds behind Auckland, which was in first place. Beating back to the weather mark Brasell stood well out into the harbour, and gained a good deal of ground. By the time the weather mark was reached he was in third place, lmin 35sec behind Auckland, and 24sec behind Wellington. Ariki dropped back slightly during the next round, but managed to keep ahead lof Southland to the finish.
