BETTING DURING HOLIDAYS

BIG' DECREASE IN ' RECEIPTS

FIGURES FOR CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR

Investments on the totallsator by New Zealand racegoers declined during the Christmas and New Year period by £68,720 10s, when compared with the total for the same meetings in 1938-39. This represents a fall of less than 5 per cent. . • From December ,23 to yesterday, the final day .of the holiday programme, the amount invested totalled £1,170,110 10s, compared with £1,238,831 for the, 1938-39 Christmas and New Year meetings. It appears difficult to assign a cause for this fall in investments, for though the majority of .dlubs shared in the decline of totalisator revenue, at least one, the Auckland Racing Club, was able to record a substantial increase of more than £50,000 for the four days of’racing. On the other hand the Greymouth Jockey Club had to face the postponement pf the final day, a tact that would undoubtedly influence the , position there. Again, considering the aggregate for racing club investments, it must be remembered that the Dunedin Jockey Club held an additional day’s racing. The total handled yesterday on all machines at New Zealand fixtures was £188,842, compared with £189,748 for the same day in 1939. This represents a decrease of only £833. Actually the investments at yesterday’s racing fixtures showedt in the aggregate, a slight increase, but the big fall in totalisator revenue for the Canterbury Park meeting yesterday (£1749) brought the grand total for the day down. That was the only trotting meeting yesterday. For the whole Canterbury meeting the totalisator receipts were down by £3334, the relative figures being: 1938, £89,432; 1940, £86,098. .
