AKAROA COUNTY COUNCIL
DEVIATION OF ROAD TO LIGHTHOUSE The Akaroa County Council at its last meeting, decided to construct a deviation in the road to the Lighthouse, in answer to a request made to the council. There were present Crs. S. J. Vogan (presiding), Jos. Hayward, O. A. Thelning. and A. R. Haylock. Cr. Haylock rc*iprted having sold rights to cut cocksfoot seed on the sides of Kaik road, the Long Bay road, Morgan’s road, and the old Akaroa road. The clerk; (Mr C. Stewart) also reported having sold seed on the Summit and Hickory roads. ■ The Canterbury Provincial Council of the Patriotic Fund, wrote asking the council to conduct a flag week for the patriotic funds in the county. It was decided to postpone the proposal for a district appeal .in the meantime, ' The Department of Internal Affairs wrote suggesting that gatherings of old settlers should be. held throughout the centennial celebrations and notifying that special ribbons should be provided for Maoris and white settlers who had resided for 75 years or more in New Zealand. It was left to the clerk to compile lists of old settlers. The Public Works Department wrote advising that a subsidy would be granted when telephone or power lines were shifted, the local bodies- being liable for one-quarter of the costs. The county foreman reported that during the month the Land’s End road had been metalled and screened. _ A suggestion from the New Zealand Counties’ Association that the Transport Department should receive onethird of the fees collected in motordrivers’ licences, instead of the Department receiving' all payments, was approved. The Akaroa Cocksfoot Seedgrowers’ Association wrote asking thecouncil to release as many employees as possible for the cocksfoot harvesting season. Although the members considered that the poor, crop did not warrant this action it was decided to leave permission to the discretion of the foreman. . , The financial statement showed receipts since last meeting as £220 2s 3d There was a debit balance of £5131 12s 4d. Cash in hand was £124 10s 3d.- Accounts passed for payment were £709 10s 6d, leaving a debit balance of £5716 12s 6d. MEMORIAL OBELISK IN AKAROA RESTORATION PLAN The cost of restoring the Green Point memorial obelisk at Akaroa for the centennial celebrations was considered by Mr Paul Pascoe, architect, of Christchurch when he visited Akaroa during, the week-end. ' He was accompanied by the Mayor of Akaroa, Mr F. R. E. Davis, and the borough foreman, Mr J. Truman. Mr Pascoe is to prepare a report lor the Public Works Department, Provision will be made for repairs to the obelisk itself and the lettering. It is proposed to enclose the area on which the monument now stands with a concrete or rock wall. The, pathway leading to the memorial will'be reconstructed and metalled. 5 PRESENTATiONS MADE AT LITTLE RIVER Many residents of Little River and the surrounding districts met in the. Little River Town Hall to say farewell to the soldiers of the district who will leave shortly for service overseas. The evening was spent in dancing for which "the music was played by Mrs Wilkins, Miss E. Rae, Messrs B. Stuart, C. W. ChappeL C. Haack, and F. Coop. Songs were sung by Mrs O'Connor, Miss H. Keenan, and a recitation was given by Mr O'Connor The accompanist was Mrs Cradock The good wishes of the residents towards the men were conveyed by Mr F. Coop, chairman of the Wairewa County Council,, who presented Gunner M. Wilson with a fountain-pen, Private D. le Compte with a wristlet watch, Private M. Stevens with a wristlet watch, Private S: Cattermole with a fountain-pen, and Private A. Adams,with a wallet. They also received gifts from the Red Cross. Mr L. Brown, president of the subbranch of the Banks Peninsula Re : turned Soldiers' Association, also spoke.
