SOUTH CANTERBURY TOURNAMENT

TIMARU, December 29. Plav in the South Canterbury Bowling Centre’s Christmas tournament to-day was confined to the singles competition, and at file close of the day the following were l6 Tvvo lives: Menzies (Temuka), Carlton (Fairlie). One life: Tulloch (Ashburton) Manning (Timaru), Williamson (Canterbury), Edwards (Temuka), Hamlyn (Ashbury), Mclnnes (Temuka), Harding (West End), Taylor (Kia Toa). . Plav will be resumed at 8 a.m. to-mor-row, when all finals of the tournament will be played.
The Botany Division of the' Department of Scientific and Industrial Research is actively following up investigations concerning the growth in New Zealand of medicinal plants, supplies of which are being secured from Great Britain. Meanwhile, analyses are being made of such species of digitalis (foxgloves) which can be secured locally The department has also had prepared a comprehensive report upon the economic aspects of New Zealand seaweed. The possibilities of using New Zealand seaweed are being explored for industrial purposes, and if the position seems worth while further, work will be done in endeavours to estimate the quantities of weed available and rates of re-growth of the New Zealand species.
