CANTERBURY FINALS REACHED MANY FINE MATCHES YESTERDAY PATTINSON BEATS MAYSON BUT LOSES TO ANGAS A. D. Brown and C. Angas and Miss T. Poole and Miss K. Armstrong will fight out the singles finals this afternoon in the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association’s championships. The big surprise of yesterday’s play was the defeat of the men’s singles title-holder, J. T. Mayson, of Auckland, by R. G. Pattinson, but the latter went down in the semi-final’to Angas. In the other semi-final Brown made a great thirdset recovery to beat H. A. Barnett. It .was another , day of perfect weatlier, and the tournament, after its bad start —two complete days were lost through bad woathor —was advanced to the finals in nearly all events. The Wilding Park courts had recovered all their former speed and provided perfect playing conditions. A crowd of about 300 enjoyed a splendid day’s play. The quarter-finals of the men s singles all went according to expectations, except that in which Pattinson beat Mayson. Pattinson played wellcool, accurate, and steady—but Mayson was not quite the player who won the title last year, and came so close to winning the New championship. He would rally with the patient Pattinson for a time, but too often when he attempted to put on the'pressure for a driving or net attack, he, fell into error. Pattinson was much more sure in pressing home his attacks, his volleying for the most part being excellent. Angas was in excellent form in beating H. Dymond, with the loss of three games, and Brown hit A. R. Cant off the court with a fierce driving and volleying attack, the latter winning only one game. Barnett’s defeat of C. F. Penfold was much narrower, for Penfold had several chances of good leads in the first set. Both volleyed splendidly and played steadily from the back of the court. Brown’s Great Recovery Brown made a dramatic recovery against Barnett in the semi-final. He took the first set with excellent play, but lost much of his aggressiveness thereafter, as Barnett’s persistence and almost errorless stroking appeared to wear him down. Barnett won the second set, and went to a 4-2 lead in the third. It was then that Brown made his big effort. With Barnett still chasing hard. Brown hit fierce drives into either corner, and came to the net to bury Barnett’s deep lobs with devastating smashes. Brown took the last four games with the loss of only two points. Pattinson always gives Angas a good fight, and he did on this occasion, but the match finished as most of the games between these two have done—with Angas’s defensive resources and skilful volleying triumphing over Pattinson’s greater aggressiveness and impetuosity. Pattinson forced the pace more than he has in some recent games, but Angas produced brilliant passing shots and shots to Pattinson s feet as the . latter came to the net There were some excellent rallies, and the brilliant recoveries of both players delighted the gallery. Women’s Gruelling Match Miss K. Armstrong and Mrs E. L. Hatherley fought out a gruelling match, which followed almost exactly the same course as their recent ranking list game. Miss Armstrong’s game was marked by its usual fluency of stroke production, but whenever the rallies became long-drawn-out. Mrs Hatherley seemed a likely winner, because oh her stronger defensive resources. Weakness on her forehand, which too often sent balls only halfway up the court, lost Mrs Hatherley the initiative many times, and Miss Armstrong rarely failed to set up a useful attack from such an opportunity. The match was played in the hottest part of the day, and severely taxed the physical reserves of both players, but both fought hard to the last ball. There were many long and gruelling rallies, with both players making fine recoveries. Both varied their driving game with net attacks and both volleyed well. Two hard hitters contested the other semi-final. Miss T. Poole, the defending champion, beating Miss H. Elsom after a match of varying standard. There were some fine exchanges of fierce drives, but both players were apt to take risks in attempting overambitious shots. Miss Poole had her strokes under better control than her opponent did, especially on the backhand, and in her many forecourt attacks she gained a useful margin of volleying placements over the points gained by Miss Elsom with her fast passing shots. Excellent Doubles Games The men’s doubles finalists are Brown and Angas and Mayson and Cant. The former pair avenged meir defeat of last year’s tournament by beating Pattinson and Penfold m

straight sets. It was a fine match, especially in the first set, in which Brown and Angas .made a remarkable recovery from 2-4 and 0-40. Angas. volleyed with precision and Brown was again deadly in his overhead work and forehand driving. Pattinson and Penfold began well, but were forced into errors by the severity of their opponents’ game. Mayson and Cant were usually able to keep control of the net position in their semi-final match against B. E. and M. J. Souter, but the persistent retrieving- of the latter pair caused the winners some anxious moments. Mrs Hatherley and Miss Poole were in fine form in the women’s doubles semi-final against Misses B. Gould and D. Dickey. Here again it was a case ot superior volleying being the deciding factor. The other semi-final was a protracted struggle between Misses M. Wake and K. Armstrong and Misses H and D. Elsom. It was an excellent match, too, with the shrewder court r craft of the former pair prevailing in the crucial stages of the third set. Of several excellent mixed doubles, an event which has progressed only as far as the semi-finals, one of the best was played late in the evening between Penfold and Miss Wake and Pattinson and Miss Armstrong. Pattinson and Miss Armstrong played well in the £rst set but lost some of their accuracy as they tired, and eventually Penfold’s keen anticipation in finding volleying openings and Miss Wake’s sound driving carried them through.
