SCHOOLS’ MATCH IN DUNEDIN WIN FOR CHRIST’S COLLEGE [THE PRESS Special Service.! DUNEDIN, December 15. Otago Boys’ High School made a better showing on the second day of the annual cricket match with Christ’s College, but was unable to make up the first innings deficit of 108 runs. Conditions were Ideal for cricket to-day. A light rain which fell early soon cleared and handicapped the College bowlers for only about the first hour of play. High School, following on, opened quietly and Overton and Partridge had given their side a start of 26 when two wickets fell quickly. Gough reached double figures before getting a leg In front to Castle, and then Partridge and Chettleburgh were associated in a good partnership which was broken just betore lunch when Partridge left. Shortly alter the resumption the end was in sight and with the exception of Rennie, with 16. no one stayed long. Partridge's 42 was a patient and valuable innings, and he was unlucky to be caught In trying to hook a short ball. , . College, with 23, runs to get. lost two wickets with only six on the board. Williams being completely beaten by Partridge and Wright brilliantly caught by Gough close-in off the same bowler. Monaghan, who impressed as a promising lefthander. and Castle, the captain, obtained the required runs without much difficulty. The College fielding was again smart and clean, although two Of three catches were dropped. Otago’s out cricket showed a marked improvement on the first day's display. Their running between wickets was much better than in the first innings, but was still far from being perfect. December 15., A decision to play in the Dominion junior tournament at Christchurch from December 27 to January 2 was reached at a special meeting of the Otago Cricket Association to-night, on the condition that a sufficiently strong side was available for the trip north. The Taranaki Association invited the Otago Plunket Shield team to play a match against Taranaki at New Plymouth on its northern tour. It was decided that it was too late to make arrangements for a match and that it would be impossible to fit in a fixture this tour. FRIENDLY MATCH ’ The Veterans played a team from the “Temperance and General Mutual Life Society on the Hagley Park oval. The Veterans batted first on an easy wicket against accurate bowling and made 104 runs. W. Randall 33 (retired) and A. C. Cross 21 were the only double-figure scorers. P. McCoy, with three wickets for 12 runs. B. W. Eder, two for 12, A. Robinson, one for 8, P. Butler, one for 12, and C. W. Hampton, one for 13, bowled well for the T. and G. team, whose score of 119 runs was made in quick time. A. Robinson made 48, R. E. Boag 16, J. C. Fowler 12. and L. Hartley 21 not out. T. McClelland, who took four wickets for 54 runs, A. C. Cross, two for 5, W. Randall. two for 37. and C. Hooke, one for 17, bowled for the Veterans. The T. and G. team won by 15 runs. SERVICE CORPS PLAYS ARTILLERY A cricket match was played at Hagley Park between teams from the Army Service Corps and from the Artillery. The Service Corps team made 149 runs (Miller 39 retired, Jarden 47). In the bowling, Scott took four wickets for 13 runs, including the hat-trick. The Artillery team replied with 80 (Hancock, run out, 21. Currie 34). -
