SOLDIERS’ LIBRARY SERVICE POOR RESPONSE AT HANGIORA "There has been no response at all in Rangiora to the appeal for books for the soldiers in camp,” said Mr W. C. Prosser, at the monthly meeting of the Rangiora Borough Council on Thursday evening. Mr Prosser was commenting on the report to the council from the librarian (Miss J. McLaughlin), in which it was stated that, although the library service for the soldiers was under the direction of the Country Library Service, the support of the public through the library was essential. Mr Prosser said that when he had inquired at the library, he had found that no books or periodicals had been contributed by the public of Rangiora, and that he had immediately given about 20 books from his own shelves. Mr G. A. McAlpine said that he was unaware that books could be contributed through the local library, and that he had sent a parcel direct to the camp. He thought it was through lack of knowledge of the scheme, and not Tack of patriotism that the people of Rangiora had not supported the appeal. ASSISTANCE FOR POOR AT RANGIORA "Lots of people think that with social security, and other things, no one needs assistance, but to-day there are more than ever who do,” said the Mayor of Rangiora (Mr C. W. Tyler), at the monthly meeting of the Borough Council on Thursday evening. Mr Tyler was asking for the full support of the members of the council at the community sing to be held next Wednesday evening as part of the festivity week celebrations. The proceeds of the sing will be used to’ provide Christmas comforts for the poor in Rangiora. Mr . Tyler asked that the councillors set an example to the public in support of a good cause.
