NO CENTENNIAL REGATTA
CANTERBURY DECISION ROWING CLUBS DEPLETED Depletion of Canterbury rowing clubs by the claims of military service has caused the Canterbury Rowing Association to abandon the project of holding a Centennial regatta. Canterbury will not, therefore, have a visit from the Australian eight-oar crew which is to tour the Dominion this summer. The committee of the association discussed the proposal last evening to hold a' special invitation eights race as the principal event of a Centennial regatta but speakers doubted the possibility of getting crews from other centres and of getting strong crews from • Canterbury clubs. Several delegates reported that their crews were likely to be weakened in the New Year. Mr W. G. Atack moved that the regatta be abandoned and Mr C. A. Cooper agreed that if it could not be done well it should not be done at all. Mr L. C. Byers: The lot now in camp will be away and probably a new lot will be in. Mr.E. S. Velvin: In any case it seems very doubtful whether we are going to get any money from the Government. The motion was carried. AUSTRALIAN CREW FOR N.Z. (Received December 12, 7 p.m.) SYDNEY, December 12. A series of trials will be held at the week-end to select a state eight-oar crew to visit New Zealand. The crew will leave in January to compete at the New Zealand centennial games, and also at four of the five regattas, including Auckland, Wellington, and Lyttelton.
