WOMEN’S DIVISION OF FARMERS’ UNION

BROADFIELD BRANCH The Broadfield branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union celebrated its anniversary with an afternoon social. Items were given by Mrs French and Mrs R. Carpenter, and a sketch by Mrs H. Coleman and Mrs M. Gallagher (Ladbrooks). A competition was won by Mrs F. Ridge. The winners of most points gained in competitions during the year were: Miss D. Neiman 1, Mrs J. Davidson 2, Mrs F. Neiman 3. Afternoon tea was served by members. \ ENGAGEMENT NOTICE

The engagement is announced of Rona Permain, fourth daughter of Mr and Mrs W. J. Sparrow, Allen’s road, Ashburton, to Ronald Hunter, second son of Mr and Mrs R. S. White, William street, Ashburton.

PRE-WEDDING PARTIES

Miss Blanche Efford was the guest of honour at a “kitchen” gift tea given by Mrs Sydney Handisides (Bryndwr). Among those present were Mesdames Sydney Handisides, Norman Wright, C. Holdsworth, J. Crombie, Misses Blanche Efford, Betty Cooper, Joan Evans, May Lockwood, Nelle Hall, Hazel Field, Ruth Fear, Shirley Jamieson, Eileen McDavitt, Alison Luxton, Olwyn Jones, Lilian Main, Mary Hardy, Stella Gates, Elsie Mulholland, and Rae Baird.

Another enjoyable party for Miss Efford was that given by Miss Eileen McDavitt at Miss Naare Hooper’s studio in Lichfield street.

Members of the Loyal Perseverance Lodge held an enjoyable dance in the Lodge . Hall, Barry’s Bay. any visitors and residents from the surrounding bays were present. Messrs R. A. H. Stewart and E. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

BURWOOD

There was a large attendance of members and friends at the Parish Hall, Burwood, when the Burwood Women’s Institute held its October meeting. Mrs Southward presided. Mrs H. Smith spoke of work done by the Red Cross Society, and later members decided to form a sub-branch at Burwood.

It was announced that a silver cup given by Mrs Dunn would be presented to the instifute member gaining most points in competitions held during the year. Approximately 17 members of the institute will visit Darfield to attend the meeting of the Canterbury Federation. Results of competitions were:—Posy bowl: Mrs Liggins 1, Mrs Southward 2, Mrs Collett 3. Best bloom: Mrs Dick 1, Mrs Partridge 2, Mrs Freeman 3. Marmalade; Mrs Hendersen 1, Mrs. Truman 2, Mrs Thelning 3. A successful “bring and buy” sale was held. The hostesses were Mesdames Young, Henderson, Kerr, and Haffenden,

PREBBLETON At the monthly meeting of the Prebbleton Women’s Institute, Mrs H. Prebble presided. Mrs J. Easterbrook and Miss S. Horsfield were appointed delegates to the half-yearly meeting of the Canterbury Federation. Members brought parcels of goods as Christmas gifts for the lepers of Makogai Island, and goods from the Disabled Soldiers’ Re-establishment Committee were on sale. A talk on “Early Maori Art” was given by Mr R. S. Duff, of the Canterbury Museum, and examples of MjaoTi' handicraft were displayed. The month’s competitions resulted:— Bloom, Mrs J. Easterbrook 1, Mrs H. Widdowson and Mrs W. Kolkman, equal, 2, Mrs E. Higgs and Mrs J. Varley, equal, 3; Victorian posy, Mrs J. Easterbrook 1, Mrs A. Page 2, Mrs F. Page 3; knitting bag, Mrs E. Higgs 1, Mrs A. Page 2; Mrs F. Page 3. The hostesses were Mesdames T. Port, L. Williams, and J. Easterbrook.

GRAIN’S BAY

The October meeting of the Okam s Bay Women’s Institute was held recently. Mrs Boleyn presided. Mrs Boleyn read a chapter from “Brown Bread,” by Miss B. E. Baughan. which was much appreciated. . The competitions resulted;— Frock, Miss Nancy Moore 1; doyley. Miss Mary Moore 1; flowers. Mrs Joseph Harris, jun., 1: special prize, smocked frock, Mrs G. Boleyn. The hostesses were Mesdames J. Harris, sen., J. Thacker, and Miss E. Harris.
