Mr and Mrs William Toomey (Riccarton), who have been visiting England and Europe, returned to New Zealand by the Rangitiki this week. Miss Joyce Bruce (“Ocean View,” Seafield) has returned home after a visit to Mrs K. B. Gollan, “Totaranui.” Waipawa.
Mr and Mrs Jack Anderson (Dunedin) will be visitors to Christchurch for Carnival Week and will be the guests of Mr and Mrs Geoffrey Kingscote, Fendalton. Mrs H. Berthon Williams (Havelock North), who has been spending some weeks in Christchurch, will leave for the north to-night. Mr Eric Riddiford, president of the Wellington Racing’ Club, and Mrs Riddiford will be visitors to Christchurch for Cup week, and will be the guests of Miss D. Humphreys, Fendalton. Mrs T. Herrick, with her baby, arrived in Christchurch from Hong Kong yesterday and left later for Timaru to stay with her parents. Mr and Mrs C. L. Orbell, Pentlow. Mrs Kenneth Ballantyne (Coldstream Lodge, Fendalton). who has been visiting England and Europe, arrived in Fremantle on her homeward journey on Monday, and is expected to leave Sydney for New Zealand during the second week in November.
Miss Gladys Sommerville (Wellington), who is the guest of Mrs M. H. Godby Fendalton, will leave for the north to-night.
News was received by cablegram in Christchurch yesterday that the marriage of Miss Cicely Turner, younger daughter of Mr and Mrs H. S. E. Turner. Latimer square, and Mr John Swift was celebrated in England on Saturdav last. October 21. The bride left Christchurch for England about 18 months ago, and her parents are also at present visiting England. Mrs J. Jennings, who has been spending several months in Australia, has returned to Christchurch, and is staying at “Stonehurst. Gloucester street. She was accompanied on the return trio by her eldest son. Mr John Jennings, who has recovered from the effects of his recent accident.
Mrs Rita Tailor, who recently reD rned from Paris and New York, arrived in Christchurch bv aeroplane yesterdav. She will be a guest at the Clarendon Hotel untu November 5.
Mrs D. C. Kidd ("Single- Hill.” Fairlie). who has b-’en spending the week-end in Christchurch, returned home yesterday.
Miss S. Gillespie (“The Dpwns,” Bennetts) and Miss I. Gillespie (St. Albans) left yesterdav for Gore where they will be the guests of their aunt, Mrs A. V. Baker.

Mrs Robert Semple will arrive by the steamer express this morning and will visit the West Coast.
To provide a rest home for farmers’ wives and daughters, the trustees of the New Zealand Sheepowners’ Acknowledgment of Debt to British Seamen Fund have, with the permission of the Government, handed, a four-acre section and hostel, previously utilised for training daughters of British seamen, to the Women’s Division of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union. This is shown in the annual report of the chairman of the trustees (Mr E. Newman) to the meeting of subscribers in Wellington yesterday. The gesture was in recognition of assistance from the farming community and from the Women’s Division towards the seamen’s fund. The land is at Awapuni.
At the annual meeting of Girl Guides held on Tuesday night, Miss Bromley Cocks, acting-provincial commissioner, was presented by Connie Donaldson and Gertrude Brown with a world guide flag—bjue with gold trefoil—made by themselves. Miss Donaldson is district captain in the east district and captain of the Phillipstown company, and Miss Brown is captain in the north-west district and captain of the Riccarton company.
A farewell social was held at the home of Mr P. G. Clements, manager of P. G. Clements. Ltd., to bid farewell to Mr W. C. Paine, one of the staff, who has received an appointment to be trained as an aircraftsman in the New Zealand Air Force On behalf of the management and staff. Mr Clements presented Mr Paine with a pocket wallet wi’h the good wishes of all present Games and competitions were held and supper was served by Mrs Clements.
Just on a year ago the members of “The Press Ship” Gay Chums Club decided to raise sufficient money during the coming year to endow a cot for convalescent children at the Cholmondeley Memorial Home. Governor’s Bay. It meant a big effort, and the girls are all voung. midway through their teens, but they are now able proudly to announce that they are well on their wav to £IOO. A bazaar to be held in the Foresters’ Hall, Kaiapoi this afternoon and this evening should considerablv augment their funds, and bring the triumphant finish in sight. The range of the goods to be offered at the bazaar is surprising. Bovs’ trousers and women s overalls 'are on the list, and there will be competitions and afternoon tea In the evening there will be sideshows. Engineered by thusiasm of youth the bazaar should prove a great success.
