Interest in Camping It was reported that in Canterbury the year had been a most successful one from the point of view of camping. This year, for the first time, all guides and guiders in camp had the

benefit of the headquarters’, insurance scheme, which, for a very small premium a head, covered all risks. Camps had been held at Allandale, Charteris Bay. French Farm, Burwood, Coe’s Ford, and two at Inveresk. Six West Coast guides had been able to attend the camp at Inveresk. In South Canterbury camps had been held at Waimate, Wailawa, and Waihi Gorge. The Cashmere pack had also held a holidy at Rakaia Huts. Guiders, especially the younger ones, were urged to obtain campers’ certificates, and those who for various reasons were unable to do so, were asked to interest guides in the outdoor part of guiding, particularly camping and hiking.

Refresher Course At present guiders in Timaru are taking a refresher course in the theory of camping, and are paying special attention to situations that may arise in camps organised under the emergency evacuation scheme. The Westland division reported an increase in membership and two new companies. Reports of the various districts showed that excellent work had been done. There had been a large increase in the entries for swimmers, life-savers, gardeners, naturalist, and international knowledge badges and ,the child-nurse badge. The Lone and Post guides had been working very satisfactorily. Miss Dorothy Scott, who for many years had been a keen post ranger, had been called to higher service. Approximately 100 guides had signed the national emergency register, and guides and guiders had offered to assist the Christchurch Welcome Club in entertaining soldiers. Miss Mary Morten and. Miss Jane Orford were congratulated on obtaining their instructors’ certificates, and it was announced that Miss Orford had been chosen commissioner for brownies in New Zealand.

The resignation of Mrs Day, who had acted as examiner for a long period, was accented with great regret, a'nd Miss M. Cotterill and Mrs Wynn Williams have promised to take the examinations in future. At the conclusion of the meeting an entertainment was provided by the Cashmere brownies, the East belt and Cambridge terrace guides, and Cashmere rangers. Supper was served by members. '
