EROSION AT GORE BAY
PICNIC GROUNDS . THREATENED FURTHER PROTECTION WANTED Heavy erosion by the sea is threatening the beach at Gore Bay, on the coast near Cheviot. Proposals for arresting the erosion were discussed yesterday by the District Public Works Engineer (Mr F. Langbein) with representatives of the Cheviot County Council. , . , % Gore Bay is the only good beach on a long stretch of the coast, and a sum exceeding £2OOO has been spent already between the Government and the County Council in an effort to save the bay from destruction as a picnic ground. , ~ ~ Groynes were built at the northern end of the beach, near where the road from Cheviot strikes the coast, and were effective in bringing back the sand However, in recent months, erosion has set in some distance further south. A large slice of the grassy bank on which picnics and sports were held has been bitten off by the sea, in places to a chain back from the old line In one or two places, the erosion threatens to eat away the road. The dressing sheds, which, were formerly on the seaward side of the road, were shifted further inland, but .they are still in danger of being earned away if the sea’s encroachment is not arrested. , , , An early survey of this section of the bay to determine the likelihood of the success of further anti-erosion methods is likely to be made by the Public Works Department. j
