EXPORT FAT LAMBS
DISTRICT COMPETITION TO CONTINUE AGRICULTURAL AND PASTORAL ASSOCIATION An intimation from the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board that the district competition in export fat lambs wopld be continued as far as local judging was concerned was received at the meeting yesterday of the Ashburton Agricultural and Pastoral Association. Mr J. Lowery presided. New conditions for the competitions were forwarded. No lambs will be sent to London because of the existing conditions. Mr F. P. Cookson, for the sheep committee, recommended that the trophy given by the Lyttelton Harbour Board for the iamb competition be awarded in the local competition to the competitor with the best two pens of lat lambs, ,and that an application to the board to this effect be made. Because of the present conditions, it was decided to' ask the board to give the cup at the judging at the Fairfield works rather than in London. The secretary (Mr W. H. Amos) reported that entries for the annual show were very satisfactory. In the dog classes especially there had been a distinct advance. Arrangements for controlling the gate and the parking of cars at the show were discussed. A committee was set up to go into the matter. It was decided to give £2 2s to the Ashburton Technical High School Board of Managers to assist with the shearing classes. DEMONSTRATION OF STOCK JUDGING YOUNG FARMERS’ CLUBS AT ASHBURTON As a preliminary to the stock-judg-ing competition to be held at the Ashburton Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s annual show on November 2 a demonstration of judging was given to a gathering of members of MidCanterbury Young Farmers’ Clubs at the Show Grounds yesterday. Border Leicesters were demonstrated by Colonel J. Findlay, and Southdowns by Mr R. J. Low. After the demonstration a competition in judging four Southdown ewe hoggets was held by the boys, and J. Denley,, of the Ashburton High School, was placed first. J. Brophy, of the Ashburton Club, was ‘ second. The judge commented favourably on Denley’s entry. Arrangements for the demonstration had been made by Mr Inch. At the conclusion of the competition a vote of thanks was,passed to Colonel Findlay and Mr Low. FISHING IN ASHBURTON RIVERS NO LARGE CATCHES REPORTED DURING WEEK-END
A fair number of fishermen in Ashburton took advantage "of the fine weather during the long week-end, and on Sunday and Monday there were many rods* out, especially at the Rangitata. The river was in good order, though oh Saturday the silveries were not running very freely. Most anglers caught a few trout, although there were no large catches reported. There was a fair amount of whitebait taken. The trout were not plentiful, but most sportsmen did not go away without two or three. . _ Fishing in the lakes during the week-end was poor. One angler §aid yesterday that it was still too early for the sport there to be very good. PERSONAL NOTES
ASHBURTON
The Rev. L. P. Bryan, of the Ashburton Baptist Church, will leave next Saturday for Invercargill, where he will take part in the special jubilee services of the North Invercargill Baptist Church. He will return to Ashburton at the end of next week. The services at Ashburton on Sunday will be taken by Mr J. Beck, of the China Inland Mission, who is on furlough. The Rev. R. S. Watson, of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Ashburton, gave the address at the South Canterbury Bible class rally held at Upper Pareora on Labour Day. Miss M. Donaldson, of. Tinwald, started duties in the office of the Ashburton Gas, Coal and Coke Company, Ltd., yesterday in place of Miss D. Bolton, who has left for Christchurch to take up a similar position with the Christchurch Gas Company. Mr R. E. Cuddon, of Waffpa, will arrive in Ashburton within the next few weeks to take up the position of supervising meat inspector, in place of Mr T. Linton Wright, who left recently for Masterton. A motion of sympathy with the relatives of Mr W. D. Blair, formerly live stock superintendent in Canterbury for tha Department of Agriculture, was passed at a meeting of the Ashburton Agricultural and Pastoral Association yesterday.

CHALLENGE FOR TROPHY ISSUED ASHBURTON COUNTY ASSOCIATION A decision to issue a challenge for the Minor Associations’ trophy was made at a meeting of the Ashburton County Cricket Association last evening. Mr R. H. Biggar presided. The trophy is at present held by the West Coast. ■ . . x It was stated that the grass wicket on the domain oval would be ready for use for the first time on Saturday. The following draw for matches for Saturday was approved:— Senior —Technical v. Public Works Department, at Winchmore; Ashburton v. Fairfield, at Fairfield; Old Boys v. Kia Ora, on Domain Oval. Junior-—Technical v. Tinwald, at Technical; High School v. Lauriston. at Lauriston; Public Works Department v. Kia Ora, at Kia Ora; Coldstream v. Methven, at Methven.

TINWALD HALL COMMITTEE DANCE HELD TO AID FUNDS A “hard-up” dance, in aid of the Tin-, wald Hall Committee’s funds, was held in the Tinwald Town Hall, there being a fair attendance. Mr Adam Rodd was master of ceremonies, and music was played by Mr Ray Dabourn. Mr Cecil Cague played extras. , The prize for the best “hard-up” costume was won by Mr and Mrs R. McClintock. A Monte Carlo was won by Miss Mavis Brown and Mr J. Donaldson, a lucky spot by. Miss Mary Watson and Mr J. Ede, and the first couple on the floor by Miss Hawke and Mr Gibbs. LAWN TENNIS OPENING OF SEASON AT LYNDHURST
The Lyndhurst Lawn Tennis Clubs season was officially opened before a good attendance of members and visitors, The president (Miss M. Rudd) welcomed all present and expressed the wish that the club would have a successful season. , ... Mr W. Cook, patron, played the first ball and. declared the coults open. . , A yankee tournament was played. The winners were Mrs Gibson Wright and Jack Crozier. OPENING OF LAURISTON SEASON
In glorious weather and in the presence of about 60 players, the Launston Tennis Club held a most successful opening day. Visitors were present from several neighbouring country dubs. ' A yankee tournament, conducted by the club captain, Mr S. Letham proved most enjoyable, the winners being Miss Ella Letham and Mr R. Lilley. In declaring the season open, the president (Mr C. A. Fyfe) wished the club a successful season. ftas T. R. Doak played the first ball and expressed good wishes for the club, .... A tennis dance was held m the evening. Music was played by Mr R. Ford (Eiffelton). The masters of ceremonies were Messrs H. Farquhar and S. Letham. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mr and Mrs F. Gray (Mitcham). YANKEE TOURNAMENT AT WILLOWBY
A yankee tournament was held on the Wlllowby tennis courts last Saturday. The winners were Miss May Chapman and R. J Chapman, and the runners-up Mrs R. J, Chapman and Allan Chapman, WOMEN’S INSTITUTE LYNDHURST ' The monthly meeting of the Lyndhurst Women’s Institute was held, recently. Mrs S. H. Anderson, president, presided. Mrs S. H. Anderson and Mrs Prebble were appointed delegates to the half-yearly meeting. Miss R. Robins gave a demonstration on the 'shampooing of carpets. The competitions resulted as follows: Table centre, Mrs Prebble 1, Mrs Pilbrow 2; -Mrs Stewart 3; (jar of flowers, Mrs Stewart 1, Mrs Dunkley 2, Miss N. Woolley 3; specimen bloom, Miss N. Woolley 1, Mrs W. Drummond 2 Mrs Gadd and Mrs Sypnes (equal) 3! During the social half-hour a competition was won by Mrs Prebble. The hostesses were Mrs Pilbrow, Mrs Symes and Miss Prebble. MINIATURE RIFLES FINAL TROPHY SHOOT AT
DORIE
The final trophy shoot of the Doric Miniature Rifle Club was fired recently. The trophy was won by M. Scott, with R. Muckle second.

Sargant (3), 60; P. Gardiner (4) 63. -7 ' FEW ENROLMENTS AT ASHBURTON No enlistments have been reported at Ashburton since October 17. when the one man who enrolled was the first for five days. The total at the depot now stands at 151. After the first few weeks of recruiting, enlistments at Ashburton have been very slow. This month they average about one a day.
