NEUTRAL ZONES FAVOURED
PEDESTRIAN CROSSING SCHEME OPINION OF SOUTH ISLAND MOTOR UNION The establishment of “neutral” zones approaching pedestrian crossings was favoured at the annual conference of the' South Island Motor Union in Christchurch yesterday. It was decided to feaffirm a previous recommendation to the Transport Department that legislation be brought down to provide for this ""safeguard for motorists and pedestrians. , The scheme provides for a zone of about 15 feet approaching pedestrian crossings. Cars entering the area would be entitled to continue over the crossing. and avoid possible embarrassment for drivers, who were forced to make a sudden halt,' through pedestrians stepping on to the authorised crossing with no regard for approaching traffic. The following draft of the main provisions in the proposed regulations for pedestrian crossings was received from the Transport Department: —Crossings to be ajt right angles: the whole body of the crossing to be coloured, or marked with wide diagonal lines; the signs to be maintained so as to be seen 100 feet away; black and white posts at the kerb-side; and safety zones on wide streets.
