OLD CHRISTCHURCH TRAMS
TO TBX EDITOR OP THE PBXSS. Sir, —Many thanks to you for allowing so much space, and to the various correspondents. The line to the railway station must have been put down by the old Canterbury company which went into liquidation in 1892. This line evidently was abandoned because there was no sign, of it in 1900. Mention was made of the old Corporation hearse, which I believe was never used for its original purpose. It was later used as a store for explosives and stood beneath the rocks on the - way to Sumner for many years. Some adventurous youths broke it open and stole some of the contents.. The body was removed from- the wheels some short time after this, and sold to a man, whose name I forget, for a house-boat.' This house-boat was derelict for some years just near the old sod hut. The motor-bus I mentioned was much later than the palace cars. The palace cars were in use at about the time the Canterbury company went into liquidation. This motor-bus was running at about the time electric trams were running.—Yours, etc., . ' • INTERESTED. August 31, 1939. [This correspondence' is now closed.— Ed.. “The Press.”]
