SHEARERS’ AGREEMENT
to the soiToa oa the pees*. Sir,—Kindly allow me space to express disgust at the rates, of pay agreed upon by our union representatives for shearers’ cooks. Their wages have been reduced by £1 a week in the last two years, which I think, is over the odds, and I am sure most cooks will agree with me when I say it is about time we formed our own union rather than be the tail of the present union. I think we have a serious grievance when you take into consideration the rates of pay and the hours worked. A presser receives £4 Is for 44 hours a week, and no Sunday work, while a cook, working more than twice those hours, and on Sundays also, only receives 10s more pay. If our union officials had had the same reductions in their pay, I think they would have been looking tor another job, so I think it is time we woke up and shifted some of them. With the present legislation they have too much in their favour, whereas before, they had to show results to hold their jobs.—Yours, etc., SHEARERS’ COOK. September 1, 1939.
