OBITUARY
MRS A. E. BARKER The death is announced of Mrs Annie Robertson Barker, wife of Mr A. E. Barker, St. Ives, Rhodes street, Merivale. Mrs Bajker was in her usqal health on Monday, and-had •Arranged to play in the golf championship of the Christchurch Ladies’ Golf Club early yesterday morning. Shortly after 1 o’clock on Monday she became gravely ill, and died a few hours later. A tolerant, understanding, sympathetic woman, much travelled, and very capable, Mrs Barker was always ready to do kindly acts in an unostentatious way. She was a skilful and reliable golfer, and was a popular member of the Christchurch Ladies Club She had served for a term on the committee, and frequently represented the club in matches. She shared her husband’s interest in fishing, and was a great lover of animals, especially of dogs. The funeral will take place to-day. MRS JESSIE KEIR The death has occurred in Christchurch of Mrs- Jessie Keir, a resident of Canterbury since 1866. She was in her ninety-eighth year. , Bom in Blairgowrie, Scotland, Mrs Keir came to New Zealand in the Victory in 1866, with her parents and eldest son. Her husband, Mr Thomas Keir, had arrived in the Dominion two years earlier. , „ . In September, 1866, Mr and Mrs Keir went to live at Rangiora, where Mr Keir was in partnership with Mr Hugh Boyd. One of Mrs Keir’s early memories of her new home ./as the great flood in Rangiora in 1868. In July, 1927, Mrs Keir moved ,to Christchurch, making her home in Barrington street. Until her death she retained all her faculties and could recall many incidents of her pioneering days in the province. WESTPORT NEWS Mrs A. A, Wilson gave a farewell afternoon party at her home in honour of Miss Molly Mullan, who will leave soon for England to continue her studies. Those invited were old girls of Nelson College. Miss D. Harkness congratulated Miss Mullan on her brilliant scholastic career at the Westport Primary School, Nelson College, and Canterbury University College, and on behalf of the guests presented her with an old girls’ blazer. Miss Black (Greymouth) is visiting Miss Powell, Russell street. . Miss Bailie has returned from a trip to Nelson. ..... Mrs G. Paul, of Ahaura, is visiting friends at Westport. . Miss C. HayrMackenzie is spending a holiday with her parents, Russell St Miss Norma Metson. of Otago University, is visiting Westport. Miss Jean Robertson, who was runner up in the West- Coast golf championship at Hokitika, has returned to Westport. PRE-WEDDING DANCE Miss Eunice Penhalluriack and Mr Raymond Moore were the guests of honour at a dance held in St. Mar- - tin’s Schoolroom, Spreydon. Amongst those present were Mr and Mrs G. BALL AT GREENDALE
Although rain fell during the Evening. there was a large attendance at the annual ball of the Greendale Women's Hockey Club, held in the Orange Hall. Excellent arrangements had been made by a committee of which Miss Letty Adams - wm secretary Messrs D. Clinton and F, Cullen directed the programme, and music was supplied by Mr Fitzgibbons band. Mr D, Clinton and Miss Letty Adams played extras. Prizes for a lucky sppt waltz were won by Miss Margaret Clinton and Mr McGoverin; and a waltzing competition was won by Miss Fitzgibbon and Mr G.
