DRAINAGE WORKS SUBSIDIES
TWO BIG UNDERTAKINGS HELD UP DISCUSSION WITH MINISTER Important works which the Christchurch Drainage Board proposes to be carried out will be discussed with the Minister for Labour '(the Hon. P. C. Webb) on his next visit to the city. The Minister advised the board last night that a subsidy for the Riccarton drainage loan was refused, because application had already been made for a loan. The bord decided to interview the Minister when another letter from the Minister offered a subsidy of £3 a wqek a man on the Wilderness drain, members remarking that the previous offer of subsidy by the Minister was £3 10s.
The finance committee’s report, which was adopted, said the committee had authorised the ordering of the timber necessary for the works to' be undertaken out of the £9200 Riccartondrainage loan.’ This was necessary to ensure ■ delivery in. the next shipment, which was due to arrive in November. The stocks in the hands of the merchants were insufficient’ to supply the requirements, which amounted, to 74,000 superficial feet.
