About £IO,OOO To Be Spent

OPENING PLANNED FOR DECEMBER The construction has been commenced of a motion-picture theatre to serve the needs of the St. Albans district. Built for Christchurch Theatrettes, Ltd., it will be in Edgeware road, near the intersection of Colombo street. It is estimated that it will cost nearly £IO,OOO, and it is proposed to open it just before Christmas. The theatre has been designed by Mr W. Melville. Lawry, and the builders are B. Moore and Sons, Ltd. It will be known as the Century Theatre. There will be accommodation for 580. It will be a single-storeyed structure, designed to resist fire and earthquake, and planned on modern lines to provide a maximum of comfort .for its patrons. The interior decorative scheme will be in silver and green, and a feature will be Neon lighting. An order has been placed for the latest type of projecting machine, incorporating high-intensity lighting, and the latest type of sound equipment is to be obtained. .. The company intends to screen only high quality "returns.” The programmes will be changed twice a week, and double-feature programmes will sometimes be offered. The directors of the company are Messrs R. F. Simes and M. F. Foate.
