NEW BUILDINGS FOR

POWER BOARD

WORK WELL ADVANCED Work on the new buildings for the North Canterbury Electric Power Board at Rangiora is now well advanced, only roofing and finishing remaining for the garage and workshop, and roofing and flooring for the store. The number of men engaged at present is 12.

It is expected that the last remaining work on constructing the reinforced concrete walls on the store will be fin-, ished to-day. Material, is available for fireproof roofing on the buildings, and this work will probably be started soon. It is estimated that the new buildings, which are situated in the main street of the town, will be completed in about two months. LAWN TENNIS AKAROA CLUB’S ANNUAL MEETING The club captain, Mr C. D. Sealey, presided at the forty-eighth annual general meeting of the Akaroa ■ Lawn Tennis Club. The annual report and balance-sheet said that the club had had an enjoyable year. At the Peninsula tournaments, Miss Noel Henning had again won the women’s singles championship, and with Miss P. had won the women’s doubles championship. Opening day was fixed for September 14.

It was decided to write a letter of thanks to Mr E. X. Le Lievre, who has been the club’s president since its inception, for his generous donation, and invite him again to be present to declare the season open.

The following officers were elected: —President, Mr E. X. Le Lievre; vicepresidents, Messrs T, Masefield, J. H. Williams, F. L. Kearney, P. G. Riches, and W. E. PROGRESSIVE EUCHRE AT AKAROA

There was a good attendance at .the Akaroa Volunteer Fire Brigade’s progressive euchre party. Mrs 'D. J. Narbey and Mr J. Glynan were the winners of the highest score, and Mrs H. S. Hayward and Mr B. Langrope won the consolation prizes. #

To augment the prize and picnic fund of the Yaldhurst School Committee a cards evening was held last Saturday at Yaldhurst. The most successful players were Mrs T. Chappell and Mr Roxborough, and consolation prizes went to Mr D, Johnston and Mr Hudson. '

AT MEETING

Concern at the height to which Lake Ellesmere had been allowed to rise was expressed at a meeting of ratepayers of the Ellesmere Lands Drainage Board. There was an attendance of 36 ratepayers. A decision to form a Lake Settlers’ Association was made and recommendations to the Ellesmere Lands Drainage Board for the letting out of the lake in the future were carried.

Claiming that the low-land occupiers were in n desperate position, several speakers criticised the board policy. A motion that, “This meeting ask the Ellesmere Lands Drainage Board to hire additional machinery and men to assist the opening of the lake, was carried. , . , The following officers were elected: —President, Mr G. SCHOOL CONCERT AT GLENTUNNEL The pupils of the Glentunnel School, to commemorate the end of term, arranged a concert in the school to entertain their teachers, fellow schoolmates, and younger brothers and sisters. Much credit was due to the group leaders, who had arranged the items. Jack Marsh presided.' The group leaders were Joy Bisphan, Thelma Marsh. Agnes McSkimming, Rae Brown, and Jack Marsh. GLENTUNNEL WOMEN’S GUILD / . ■ At the monthly meeting of the Glentunnel Women's Guild Mrs G. D. Marsh presided. The secretary, Mrs L. A. NORTH CANTERBURY ASSOCIATION CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING ■ The North Canterbury Miniature Rifle Association held its eighth annual championship meeting in the Hawarden Public Hall on Saturday evening. Favourable weathef enabled all clubs in the association to be well represented at the meeting, which was one of the most successful vet held. The entries were, on the whole upto the usual number received, but° although there tfere teams competing, the in the^in dividual and aggregate matches were lower than lat year. The entries in tne women’s section were about the same as usually received. The Kirwee Tennis Club held a successful evening in the Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s Hall recently. Prize-winners were:—Women; Miss P. Roper 1, Mrs S, Hart 2. Men: Mr N. Wilson 1, Mr D. Begg 2. Music for the dancing was played by Mesdames Begg and S. Hart.

Seventeen married couples at Fonr dettes, near Tourse, each celebrated 50 years of married life.
